THE YOU OF THE FARTHEST LIMIT Chapter 4:
Yabu stood there, his eyes on Yaotome Hikaru. He doesn’t really know the man other than that he is a very rich business man and that he is Ko or rather Kei’s husband. It was silent between them for a moment but then Hikaru moved away from the portrait and went out of the room. Yabu followed him.
Yabu watched the man in front of him carefully. There is something he could not put his finger on, it was as if there is something missing from the details Hikaru told him. He pondered for a while as he followed the man.
“You mentioned that you two met at ten. How?” Yabu asked. Hikaru paused and turned to look at Yabu. He mildly arched an eyebrow at the question asked to him. Slowly he smiled and turned to walk again, Yabu did follow him again.
“How I met her?” Hikaru asked but more to himself. “I saw her in our garden” he answered and stopped walking again, to turn and look at the window where an enormous rose garden can be seen, “That is my mother’s rose garden. That time, we are having a little party and that garden was in full bloom with red roses. Kei is standing by the arches. I went to talk to her and I know that instant she looked at me, she’ll be the one I’ll marry” he smiled, his eyes focused on the garden. “She’s really cheeky back then” he chuckled as he looked at Yabu and shrugged with a grin. He started to walk again. Yabu looked at the garden they were talking about and imagined a ten-year-old Kei standing by the arches Hikaru mentioned and he completely understood Hikaru’s feelings. That sight might have been breath taking especially with Kei’s beauty.
After staying for quite some time in the house, for Kei to get used to the house, they left and thanked Hikaru for the time and bother to accompany them even though it is obvious that he is a very busy man.

“There’s something weird in that house,” Daiki suddenly said while they were on their way home. Yabu turned to look at his friend. “Even though it is really pretty” she shook her head “It’s suffocating. I guess that’s one reason Ko, or rather Kei doesn’t want to stay there” she added and looked at rear view mirror to check on Ko who is now fast asleep at the backseat. “And Hikaru-san is pretty creepy” she added
“What do you mean?” Yabu frowned as well, his whole attention to his friend’s words.
“He never smiles” Daiki replied, “I know he flashes those teeth and his lips curls upwards, but those are not smiles. More like they are grimaces” she shivered “The expression in his eyes never changes. If he were sincere with his smile, at least it would have touched his eyes a bit. However, no. Yuya barely smiles and most of the time grimaces when I first met him so I kind of know that” she pointed out as Yabu tried to retort.
“Maybe he’s just stressed with Ko not remembering him” Yabu shrugged.
“More like he’s impatient,” Daiki mumbled, “Like if only he could force Ko, geez, let’s call her already by her real name. It is going to be confusing soon for her” she shook her head.
“You’re right,” Yabu agreed nonetheless.
After thanking Daiki for driving them home, Yabu gently put Kei on the bed and watched her sleep peacefully. She did not want to stay behind when it was time for Yabu and Daiki to go. She started crying and Yabu’s heart went out for her. He convinced Hikaru somehow to let her stay with him until she’s used to the idea that she has to go back sooner or later or until she realizes it is time for her to go back because they are her family. Even though he himself does not want to let her go, he has to because it is for her own sake. He sat at the edge of the bed, palming her face and a sad smile appeared on his lips.
“If only” Yabu muttered.
Hikaru started visiting Kei every weekend, bringing things that he says Kei loved before. They’d welcome him in or rather it was only Yabu who entertains him. Kei would be quiet the whole while and would just accept the gifts brought for her though she never uses or eats any of it. Hikaru once brought a cake for her, a strawberry shortcake from a well-known patisserie, she accepted it but simply had left it to go to waste for days and Yabu had no choice but to throw it away. Hikaru brought her roses saying that Kei really love roses but after Hikaru left Kei never looked at the roses again and simply left it to wither in one corner.
“Don’t you like these?” Yabu asked as he lifted the box of donuts from the counter and looked at Kei who was washing the cups they used for the tea when Hikaru came to visit her that day, “He said you loved these donuts” he pointed out
“I don’t love those donuts” Kei replied dully “They are too sweet and the coffee ones are disgusting and there’s too much nuts in them” she added.
“Oh” Yabu blinked and shrugged. “I’ll just be in the room, I need to finish some works” he said and turned to leave the room.
“Okay” Kei nodded down “Just tell me if you want something,” she added
“Sure. Thank you” Yabu smiled and turned to head to his working room.
As Yabu settled on his chair and reached for a pen, his hand then stopped midway. He turned his head to the door, his attention going back to the kitchen where Kei is. He frowned and tried to think for a moment. There is something wrong with Kei’s answer. He stood up then and headed back to the kitchen. Kei is still by the sink but was simply just drying the cups she washed earlier. He looked at the box of donuts again and opened it. They are still there; no bites and he could not even point out which is the coffee one.
“Do you have something to tell me?” Yabu asked then, earning Kei’s attention. She turned and slightly frowned at him then looked at the donuts. She stood still for a moment then sucked on her breath.
“What?” Kei asked, her voice squeaking a little as she tried to control her expressions.
“I think you are hiding something from me” Yabu replied “You haven’t touched these, how’d you know the coffee is disgusting?” he asked
“Did I say that?” Kei asked, tilting her head slightly with a forced smile
“Kei” Yabu called out but then Kei’s expression made him forget what he was about to say. Her pale complexion blushed and her expression was a mixture of sadness and disgust. She bit her lower lip and balled her hands. She was angry. Yabu could feel her anger and she was about to lash out.
“I hate it!” Kei yelled “I hate that name” she gritted “Why do you have to call me that!?” she screamed and ran towards the bedroom. She did slam the door but Yabu didn’t hear it locking.
Yabu stood there dumbfounded but it was only for a while. He then went to the bedroom where he found Kei sitting on the bed, her face buried in her palms. He kneeled in front of her, wanting to help her to calm down and see her face clearly.
“Kota” Kei said then as he touched her arms “Please don’t let him take me back,” she sobbed. She lifted her head, her tearful face made Yabu feel sad for her. “I don’t want to go back. Not to him, please” she begged and held on Yabu’s hand.
“What do you mean?” Yabu asked “Hikaru-san is your husband, Hotaru is waiting for you. She’s your daughter,” he explained
“I did not escape from the hospital,” Kei said then startling Yabu
“What?” Yabu frowned
“That night, I did not escape from the hospital,” Kei repeated, “I didn’t want to leave her behind but I have no choice. I needed to leave, to escape” she said and looked at Yabu straight to his eyes
“What do you mean? Do you remember everything now?” Yabu asked then
“He’ll kill us” Kei replied then and a shiver of fear ran through Yabu’s spine. He, then somehow felt that Kei was not lying. “He’ll kill us,” she repeated, her eyes filled with fear as she looks straight to Yabu’s eyes.
