OBSCURITY

Chapter 4:

Yabu sat there, watching as Yamada rolled his sleeve down and turned his head away, showing only the unbruised side of his face.

“What happened to you?” Yabu asked then

“Nothing” Yamada replied, wincing before he touched the side of his lips, the wound inflicted there bleeding.

“Sure, those bruises are nothing” Yabu snorted “Are you a yankee or what? Getting into fights or something? Acting like a prim student at school then transforming into a delinquent when no one is looking?” he accused

“I~” Yamada sighed “Shouldn’t you be going home?” he asked then, picking the towel Yuto left for him. He then dabbed his bleeding lips and tried smiling to Yabu.

“Why are you doing this to yourself?” Yabu asked then all of a sudden, startling Yamada who blinked at him at first then looked down. The younger boy gripped on the towel then let go, dropping it there simply.

“You don’t know anything” Yamada murmured “You’re born in a perfect surrounding. Your parents love you. You have siblings. You have money” he said “You’re lucky” he added

“But that’s not the point here” Yabu pointed out “You keep on changing the topic” he said “And if I don’t know anything, it’s because I’m kept at bay” he said

“What would you do if I tell you? It’s not that you care? In the first place, you don’t even like me. You’re not my friend, I’m not your friend” Yamada replied “And it’s not that you can help me” he said

“Oh really” Yabu rolled his eyes “You’re right, I don’t like you. Even a little bit” he said “And why did I even bother asking you why you have such injuries? It’s not that you’re my friend I would care for” he sneered “That’s right, keep drowning in your own misery” he said and stood up, heading then to the door “You know what? I’m already close to being concerned, you just ruined it” he said lastly and then left, slamming the door of the infirmary.

---------------

Yamada wanted to apologize but even so, he couldn’t help his self. No one would understand him, even Yuto. No one would understand why he kept - like what Yabu said - drowning his self in his own misery. He could run away, save his self from everything. He’s supporting his self in the first place and it’s not that his father cares for him any longer. He was long dead as well in his father’s life. Still, he doesn’t want to leave him alone. Even though his father had become abusive and violent towards him, Yamada still considers him as his family and he’s the only family his father has.

“Yamachan?” Yuto’s voice interrupted his thoughts. Yamada looked at his friend and smiled faintly.

“Are you ready to go now?” Yamada asked, smiling faintly

“You’re crying” Yuto pointed out, taking his handkerchief out and offered it to Yamada.

“Oh, thank you” Yamada said, smiling again as he took the handkerchief.

“One day” Yuto said then as he took the handkerchief from Yamada and dabbed the latter’s cheek, wiping the ugly tears away “You’d be able to open up with someone” he nodded down “It won’t be me for sure but I’ll still hope, somehow” he smiled

“Thank you, Yuto. You’re very kind” Yamada sighed

-------------

Yabu frowned, watching as Yamada entered their classroom. The boy had stayed away for several days, maybe to recover. The bruises he has was now gone but maybe there are still some but hidden already.

“You missed last Sunday” Yabu commented as he slid next to Yamada as their lunch break came

“I had to do something else” Yamada replied, avoiding Yabu’s eyes. He bit his lower lip and tried to look again but to instantly look away as he found the other boy staring at him intently

“I won’t be asking you anything since it’s your life” Yabu rolled his eyes “But those are not jokes to set aside” he pointed out “I don’t care what happens to you as long as it doesn’t bother me” he said

“I won’t let it bother you” Yamada shook his head

“Good” Yabu sneered

But even so, it still bothers him. Yabu eyed the boy seated in front of him, reading on a book while waiting for him to finish the workbook. There are thin scars on the boy’s face and it could only be seen when the light is good and it is stared at properly.

“Things aren’t always what you expect from the world” Yamada suddenly said then, startling Yabu

“What?” Yabu asked

“Nothing” Yamada shook his head

“Sometimes you speak nonsense” Yabu frowned “I’m done answering this” he said and shoved the book back to Yamada who took it and went over his answers. After a minute of checking, Yamada raised his head and looked at Yabu intently. “There are things that you don’t expect in this world” he smirked and stood up to stretch then glanced down to the book he answered with perfectness. Yabu knows that people see him as a stupid person but no stupid person could get into high school. Just because people like Yamada exists that people with average mind like his are ignored and judged according to their performance.

“How can you act like you don’t know a thing when in fact you can do well?” Yamada asked

“I can decide when I want to do well or not” Yabu yawned “I hate doing what my father wants that’s why I do my best to piss him off” he shrugged

“Should I stop coming here to tutor you?” Yamada asked then as he started packing the materials they’ve used

“It’s your decision” Yabu shrugged “I just don’t want to stay in today answering those activities you are giving” he shook his head

“Since we’re done for now, I’ll be leaving” Yamada bid and picked his bag. Yabu watched him walk towards the door and stop there for a second as if thinking about something before then leaving after once more saying goodbye. Yamada is really weird.

-----

Yamada bit his lower lip and looked up to their apartment. His father is home and for sure he’s in the lounge, watching something while drinking. He doesn’t want to risk his self for today and because of that fear, Yamada turned away and headed to the nearest place that would keep him safe.

-----

Yabu walked towards the infirmary and slid the door open, startling both the school nurse and the student assistant but he cared less for the woman staring and inquiring him of what he needs and focused to the other one inside the room. It’s been a week now since he saw Yamada and the younger boy wasn’t going to school. He has a hunch of what happened and he knows exactly who he should ask to what had happened to Yamada.

“I need to talk to you” Yabu said and walked out to be followed by Yuto. They picked the stairway as their place of talk. “Where’s he?” he asked, frowning as Yuto shook his head

“If you’ll just bully him then I won’t answer you” Yuto said

“Am I that desperate to bully someone to even look for them? Can’t I be concerned since he’d been skipping school for a week already and it’s nearly impossible for him to do that” Yabu grumbled

“Well, to assure you he’s fine and he’s somewhere I won’t be telling” Yuto waved a hand to dismiss the topic “He’ll be back to school soon” he added

Indeed Yamada returned after three days. He looked thinner and exhausted and Yabu took note of the bruise on the latter’s hand. There is really something wrong with him and Yabu couldn’t help to pull his self away from the issue. He could ignore him like how he used to do before but somehow Yamada had made an impression in his life already and it is not easy to remove.

“You plan on coming again on Sunday?” Yabu asked as he sat on Yamada’s table soon after their class ended

“Yes” Yamada replied tiredly “We’ll be focusing on English so you might want to start reading on your textbook” he sighed, closing his bag and soon stood up

“Whatever” Yabu shrugged and watched the younger boy leave

-----

It wasn’t a good day either, Yamada stood in front of the door of their apartment and found it close again and he could hear voices inside. Last Sunday when he came home, it was of the same situation. His father had brought home a woman who had invaded even his bedroom. When he finally got it through a window in their kitchen, Yamada found her lying on his bed and is very wasted. She didn’t even stir as Yamada tried to wake her up, giving him no choice but to sleep in the living room. But of course, if his father sees him, he would be hit and get hurt him again. It happened the first two days. Yamada slept in the couch and his father saw him. He was hurled and hit badly that he has to miss several days of school since he’d been too sick and hurt.

To think that he wasn’t feeling any better than normal.

-----

“You’re late” Yabu accused as Yamada stepped in the study room

“Sorry” Yamada replied hoarsely and sat instantly on the chair, pulling out then a book from his bag and passed it to Yabu “I hoped you read what I suggested to you to read, I can’t focus on tutoring so just answer this and I’ll check on it later” he said

“Are you alright?” Yabu asked, eyeing the boy curiously

“Not really” Yamada shook his head and rested it on the table “But I need to be here somehow” he added and closed his eyes

“It’s the pay” Yabu grimaced and reached for the book to start on answering.

“Yes, I need it” Yamada sighed and there and then fell asleep.

Yabu doesn’t still understand Yamada but he doesn’t want to disturb the boy looked he needed the sleep badly. He isn’t that cold hearted and sat still as he scribbles on the book given to him. He even made his handwriting lighter. After finishing his task, Yabu looked at Yamada who is still sleeping. It’s been past the usual tutorial time and he wonders if he needs to wake the boy up already.

“Don’t you want to invite Yamada-kun, down for dinner?” Yabu’s father asked as Yabu slid on his spot for dinner

“How’d you know he’s still here?” Yabu asked

“I heard from the maid you asked for blanket, so are you two getting along just fine?” his father asked with a smile

“Snap it” Yabu rolled his eyes

“How is his teaching?” his father asked then instead

“Just fine” Yabu shrugged

“You’re actually smart, you just need an inspiration” his father pointed out

“Snap it, I told you” Yabu grumbled

Inspiration his damn, Yamada is more like a stress forcing him to work. Yabu forked his food and glanced to the door, wondering if Yamada is still in his sleep. He’s still asleep when Yabu came back, carrying a tray of food.

“Hey, wake up” Yabu said, nudging Yamada’s leg

“I’m sorry!” Yamada yelped and jumped off the chair, making him fall down the floor. “I’m sorry” he whimpered and curled, his hands protecting his head.

“What’s wrong with you?” Yabu frowned but he couldn’t help feeling bad to see even anyone to act this way. It is bare to know that someone is definitely hurting the boy and the bruises are there as evidences.  “No one will hurt you” he said and knelt next to Yamada, pulling him to sit up “You’re okay” he murmured, watching Yamada’s huge eyes filled with fear

“I’m sorry” Yamada whimpered

After assuring Yamada that there’s nothing to worry about, Yabu settled him in one of the chairs in the room and gave him dinner at which Yamada nibbled on.

“If you’re feeling alright, why don’t you take a room here and rest?” Yabu offered

“I can’t” Yamada shook his head

“Then I’ll just take you back to your house. It’s too late” Yabu offered then “And don’t say no because I rarely offer help” he pointed out

“Okay” Yamada sighed and stood up. “I’ll go now” he said

“Sure” Yabu nodded down and stood up as well.

Yabu eyed the small apartment building in front of him then to Yamada who sighed heavily and dragged his self towards the stairs leading to the second floor.

“You live here?” Yabu asked

“It’s home” Yamada replied and pulled his keys out, standing then in front of the third door. He took a deep breath and inserted the key, turning the lock to enter but as he pushed the door open, the chain inside was hooked. He bit his lower lip but as he closed the door, he heard some shuffling and the chain fell off and the door was opened wider.

“So you did plan getting back” Yamada’s father barked

Yamada stood rigid in front of his father, his heart shrinking in fear. He tried to calm his self but failed to do so especially that his father had reached for his collar already. He knows what would happen next but then someone grabbed him by his arm, the hold pinching him painfully but he knows that it is a hope and help he should hold on.

“Who the hell are you?” Yamada heard his father. He then suddenly remembered Yabu who brought him home.

“What do you think you’re doing?” Yabu spat back

“You don’t need to give a damn about my business with my son, you’re not the one who feeds him” Yamada’s father snapped at Yabu who still hasn’t let go of Yamada

“So what?” Yabu retorted “Would you just let go of him!” he exclaimed, pulling Yamada hard

“You’re the one who should let go” Yamada’s father yelled and tugged Yamada’s collar, making the boy wince at the force

Things happened just too fast and even before Yamada could settle his fear from him, he as now in front of Yabu trying to stop his father from hitting the latter again. His father somehow had managed to hit Yabu squarely on the face.

“Dad, no” Yamada shook his head

“You’re not my son, don’t you dare call me your father” his father spat again on his face. He doesn’t know how many times he had heard it from his father but for the first time, Yamada felt ashamed especially that Yabu is there, hearing it. “You’re a bastard your mother had with her man. You’re no blood of mine” he hissed, slapping Yamada “You dare calling me your father when you look like the man who fucked your mother till she got pregnant with you” he said violently

“I’m sorry” Yamada whimpered

“Shut up!” his father yelled, knuckling Yamada on the jaw

“That’s it” Yamada heard Yabu and pulled the boy with him

They’re inside the car again with Yabu’s driver driving him just anywhere since Yabu had instructed it. The silence was painful but it was better than to talk, especially that Yabu had heard everything Yamada’s father had said.

“You heard it” Yamada snorted and made Yabu look at him “The cat’s out the sack, huh?” he asked

“Stop it” Yabu muttered, frowning at Yamada who has tears flowing from his eyes but is smiling at something in front of them

“You remember the day you asked if I love my mother?” Yamada asked, turning to look at Yabu but wasn’t actually seeing the latter. He couldn’t even think properly to what should he do. “I did” he said “But after she died, not anymore. Why? Because we all learned the truth about my odd looks” he snorted “When I was six I was asked if my dad’s my real dad because I don’t look like him at all, even my mother. I was confused but I was assured that I am really his son” he started “But it turns out wrong after all” he shook his head

“Are you feeling better with you talking like that?” Yabu asked “If you are then you’re pathetic” he rolled his eyes

“I am” Yamada nodded down “I’m fine here, drop me off” he said. He stood by the roadside and watched Yabu’s car disappear from his sight.
