I'm'na start a meme!
On the assumption that in ten years, a lot of twenty-somethings will be re-reading Twilight and wincing in embarrassment:
Name three series or writers that you devoured as a teen but are now somewhat sheepish about having liked as much as you did. For each series, list off what you dug about them, what you're wincing at in retrospect, and whether you'd read 'em again.
1. Dragonlance
WHAT I LIKED: Totally fun stories, cool characters, and the knowledge that they were in fact based on somebody's D&D game.
WINCING IN RETROSPECT: Rampant Mary Sueism, and, yeah, definitely based on somebody's D&D game.
WOULD I READ 'EM AGAIN? Yeah, probably--at least the two core trilogies, and maybe the short stories. They may not be great, but they're still a lot of fun. And I do still think a lot of the characters are neat.
2. The Vampire Chronicles
WHAT I LIKED: Hot vampire angst. Historical stuff. Armand.
WINCING IN RETROSPECT: Oh, so very much. I actually got disenchanted with these mid-series--they pretty much go downhill from the third one on.
WOULD I READ 'EM AGAIN? Probably not. I still think Cry to Heaven is fuckin' rad, though. Rice should have done more non-supernatural historical porn.
3. Anne McCaffrey (I count her as a series because all her books have the same basic characters and plot, even if some of them are set in different universes.)
WHAT I LIKED: Dragons! Female protagonists!
WINCING IN RETROSPECT: Another writer I got disenchanted with mid-teens, once I noticed that every young female protagonist hooked up with her much-older father figure. Every single one. And that is really damn creepy.
WOULD I READ 'EM AGAIN? Hell, no.
