Breed restrictions = Discrimination

kashra has been looking for an apartment for us to move into when I move back up there with Charm after I graduate at the end of this month. So far, the search for an apartment that allows dogs has been difficult, but there were a few hopeful listings. Of those hopeful listings though, only a handful would even consider a german shepherd dog, which evidently has now been reduced to a listing of 0 places after correspondence e-mails were received saying that they "mistakenly said GSDs were okay."

This is bullshit.

It's hard enough trying to find a place that will even allow a dog to begin with, yet any place in the world will allow cats. Cats smell way worse than dogs, have a very good tendency to escape and are not even remotely that much more quiet than dogs (seriously, who hasn't heard cats wailing outside at night?)

The real bitch of it, are the places that say that large breed dogs are okay, so long as that large breed dog is a labrador. They don't say this explicitly, but when their listings are, "Large Breed dogs: Okay! Restricted breeds: Malamutes, Husky, Rottweiler, Doberman, German Shepherd, Pittbull, Chow Chow, Akita, Giant Schnauzer, Mastiff, Dalmatian, Poodle (seriously!), Boxer" etc, etc, etc, then what else is honestly left?

Cause lord knows that small breed dogs like terriers and chihuahuas are all that amazingly chill, quiet and non-aggressive, right? Who ever heard of a small dog barking at all hours of the night or even trying to snap at you when you try to pet it? I mean, lord knows german shepherds are all vicious baby killers...(a few more). I hope the sarcasm is noticeable.

Simply put, it's downright discrimination. I can understand management companies wanting to pre-screen dogs for temperment, ask for referrals, ask for a higher deposit or an additional monthly "pet rent" to cover damages, and I can even understand the need for waivers to be signed that indemnifies landlords from liability in the event of some kind of incident. I can understand all of these things, but I cannot understand a blanket restriction that rental managers refuse to even consider budging on. It's asinine, it's terrible business, and frankly, it should be fucking illegal.
