my job is weird.
Technically Im a court reporter. It sounds good, but Its a shitty job. In the old days the city might've paid for it, and it would've had benefits and okay pay, but now they just outsource it to an internet company. No benefits, minimum wage. And a maximum of 32 hours a week, so you can't even work full time. It's like a fucking Uber company. I could make the same money (probably more, if they gave me a 40 hour week) working for fucking Best buy or Home Depot. But: this job sounds better when people ask "what do you do", and it looks better on a resume.
I don't actually do court reporting. I record hearings for teachers who are appealing their dismissals, and parents who are petitioning for special services for their children. The hearings are done in the dept of education building. There's another division that does labor disputes in courts, so it's called "court reporting." Those ones, you're reporting, and its in a court. That division pays more, (like $200 a day, pre-tax, which is still kinda shitty for what they expect) but you have to have a driver's license, which I don't, and you have to be ready to drive 5 states away on a moments notice. Fuck that.
I had no job at all though, and this is steady money, every week (even though the pay rate is shit), and they're getting what they pay for. It's so easy. They could totally replace me with a monkey or a robot. The current assignment I'm on, I walk in, set up the equipment, record the hearing, shut it all down at the end, put it on a flash drive, and I'm done. I dont even have to type, on that one. (Although I will be, by Thanksgiving.) It's usually 6 hours a day, and Im only actually working for 3 or 4 of those.
Nobody there (as far as fellow employees or bosses) likes me, but I barely have to deal with them, I'm on my own like 90 percent of the time. Except for one other guy and one woman I'm like 20 years older than everybody, they have nothing to say to me-they arent rude, but im not there, Ive achieved that old person status where Im just like a piece of furniture, I dont register on their radar.
That's another thing-if you're at a job where everybody is either at their first job, (doing it while theyre in school) or probably their last, or this is their other gig besides working at target, you're at a dead end job.
