Bald Mountain

Bald Mountain, in the Adirondacks near Old Forge. 1.8 mi round trip, 400 ft rise, summit 2350 ft.

Does THIS look like a trail to you?!?

I stood there for a good 20 minutes trying to scrounge up the guts to continue (about a 20-ft drop down the face of the granite before the first row of trees...). During this time, I was passed by seasoned citizens, people carrying toddlers, Japanese students yapping on their cell phones, frat boys drinking Heineken out of bottles, and a group of mentally disabled adults on an outing from a group home. *sigh* HI, I'M FROM IOWA.

But I made it all the way to the firetower at the summit (Ranger Gord not included). Learn how they built it here. See vintage photos here.

See MY photos HERE, dammit, since I thought I was going to get myself killed making them. :P I think I've identified the Fulton Chain of Lakes properly in the photos...

Oh, and this is why they call it Bald Mountain.

On the way home I stopped in Old Forge and bought some refrigerator magnets at the Old Forge Hardware Store (takes up a whole city block, two floors including a gourmet kitchen-stuff shop, book store, yarn store, and furniture), had a burger, and saw a deer and a black squirrel in someone's lawn. There are also pictures of the Moose River.
