Ordinary take-for-granted things you can't do when the power is out:
- Expect ice in the freezer (or anything else there, for that matter) to stay frozen.
- Shave and shower in a windowless bathroom.
- Watch Seinfeld.
- Open the garage door as you're driving toward the house.
- Check the time on any of several digital clocks.
- Surf the web.
- Apply for jobs electronically.
- Pay bills on-line.
- Post your already-late July entry to
12_a_year.
- Sleep comfortably during a humid night under the gentle breeze of a ceiling fan.
- Feel not a little embarrassed for not having noticed any of the several mailings from the power company telling you that your credit card expiration date needed to be updated in their records so that automatic monthly bill payments would continue uninterrupted, as had been the case for many years.
Not that I, uh, have any recent personal knowledge of any of this!
