When I lived in California, I was told the fireflies had died off.
When I was a little boy I used to love to go out onto the grass in the evening and be in the middle of the "lightning bugs." And, I admit, I used to catch them and found if you squished as the light came on ...the light stayed on for a while.
Many fireflies died in my wonder of their light.
But whoever told me the fireflies had died out was wrong. Last night I came home at sunset at the yard was filled with fireflies. I turned off the motor and sat in the car with the windows open. It had been a hot day and even "down to 80" is cooling off, so I sat and I watched them signal their readiness to find a mate in an aerial dance.
I was five years old again, for just a moment.
None of them had to die for me to be filled with wonder.
Sometimes the moments are quiet and just right.
