I think I might be in need of a litle bit of LJ fic commenting etiquette guidance from all you long-time fandom folks. Is one never allowed to point out something that confuses them, not as constructive criticism, but just a plain old reader reaction? Does anything that's less than "this is great!" or "can't wait for more" mean one is berating an author in public? I'm wondering where I'm going wrong here and would honestly like to know, so I don't keep repeating mistakes in ignorance.
I've commented on fic before with points on which I'm confused or something just didn't quite sit completely well with me, and for the most part, the author has either helped me see the elements I'm not considering fully or has acknowledged problematic things or we have simply agreed--amicably--to disagree. Isn't this part of commenting too? Caring about what you're reading enough to think critically about it and engage? I don't know. Having actually been berated (since that's the word of the day) about fic before--and anyone who's followed me for a length of time knows which fic I'm referring to, lol--I really really hate to think I was doing that to someone else.
Anyway, advance apology to all the writers I read: I'm just gonna go ahead and stop commenting on fic, period, I think. Not a big fan of randomly exploding mines.
