I think I burned one corner of the roof of my mouth. It's unpleasant, and I'm not really sure how I did it.
Instead of working on Face the Flames, I thought about Creatures of the Wind today. This was my 2007 NaNo which was a rework of a story I began back in 8th grade writing on AIM with Raychel. I rewrote it in 9th grade. Then I rewrote it again. And then I rewrote it one more time. The NaNo attempt was a complete rework, but I only got a quarter of a way through the story despite hitting 50k words.
Setting of this story is a volcanic island of four countries. One is now depopulated and for most intents and purposes doesn't even exist anymore. Another is mostly nomadic hunting tribes. The other two are much more developed, but very different from one another.
Plot revolves around four people - one from each country. Slowly, they begin to understand that they are changing as individuals, physically and mentally. Each begins to have visions of the others. They are plagued by urgent feelings to seek the others out. It becomes clear that they are the new Circle of Four - four immortal spirits reborn in human form every generation to help guide humanity with their acquired wisdom and powers.
Unfortunately, this is the first time the Circle has been reborn in many generations. Hundreds of year ago, people came to resent their god-like helpers and destroyed them with the Jasaph - half-immortal spirits drawn from inanimate objects and chained for human use.
There is currently an ongoing war. The nomadic tribes of Second Country have united under the Jasaph and seek to expand their borders. Third Country can't repel their attacks because their government is pretty corrupt and their geography ill-suited for defense. The new Circle gathers in Fourth Country...
The end is a problem. I don't know how to make it... what it should be.
Annnnyway. The stuff I was straightening out today has mostly to do with the powers I'm giving the Circle. The Jasaph wield elemental powers in league with their origins, but the Circle is something beyond what humans have managed to create. Each falls in line with things that naturally run in fours - the hours of the day, the seasons of the year, the phases in a person's life. (I went crazy with the symbols associated with them once. Don't ask. I can reel off an entire list on unnecessary detail. It's sort of stupid really.)
It is tough to write magic without being gimmicky.
