Coming Home Series Announcement

Aug 20, 2012 20:05

So today as I was working on two new fics (they'll go up sometime after The Watchman is finished!) I had an epiphany that a number of my Sherlock fics, including the two I'm writing, all fit together into a larger arc about Sherlock and John after Reichenbach occurs. To date, the arc looks like this:
  1. Beyond the Grave
  2. In Silence
  3. Nowadays
  4. Dictations to aRead more... )

+ dictations to a kiss, + beyond the grave, + coming home series, sherlock is amazing, - fanfic

You've become a fic machine since you've come back! It makes me wish I read Sherlock fic.

I think often when you write a ton of fics in one fandom, they do end up seeming to share basically the same universe. Back when I was writing so much Torchwood fic, I did have a sense that they all fit together in the same chronology, though I didn't so much feel that they were all developing a theme together.

:D Thanks! It's less that I've been writing a TON of Sherlock fic right now than that I've been writing lots of fic this summer but I didn't want to post some of it (like The Watchman) until it had gone through betas and stuff. So it's all coming out now in a big rush, which is fun/does inspire me to write a bit more, or at least WANT to write a bit more. :D

How are you doing, btw? I hope things have been going well for you! Are you writing things (fic or original) these days?

I think often when you write a ton of fics in one fandom, they do end up seeming to share basically the same universe. That makes a lot of sense! I wonder if I tend to write fic a bit differently though--some of my fic uses the same characters and putting them through different plot devices which seem to turn them all into slightly different versions of themselves? If that makes any sense. Even the characters in the fic above feel very different/like variations on a theme ( ... )

I've just started grad school! I'm working on some fics - I signed up for hurt/comfort bingo, because clearly that was the thing to do right after starting grad school - though I'm not sure if you're familiar with any of the fandoms. There's a post about it pretty recently.

Yeah, I've seen a number of authors who will play around with different variants of the same character depending on the plot they're in. I don't tend to write that way, but I admire people who can differentiate different versions of the same basic character.

Congrats on starting grad school! That's fantastic. :D What are you studying?
Just went and checked out your post on h/c bingo. I ABSOLUTELY know Downton Abbey (I watched all of it in a fevered rush last winter around New Year's. : ) Branson/Sybil is one of my favorite pairings on the show. Have you written other Downton Fic perchance?
I don't know much about Rosemary Sutcliff, though I've heard a tiiiny bit about characters in The Eagle of the Ninth from when the movie came out. Based on what little I've heard though I'd definitely be interested in learning more about her books. :)

History! American history around 1900, to be specific.

I haven't written any Downton fic yet (though I'm working on it!), but there's a ton of meta under my Downton Abbey tag...and similarly I've been slowly reading through Rosemary Sutcliff's books, so there are a bunch of posts about her stuff under that tag too.

Oh, that sounds perfect. :D Can you remind me: did you always plan on going to grad school or did you decide after you left undergrad? (Dealing with that issue right now so I'm nosy about other people's experiences!)

I am excited to read your Downton Meta! Though after I read your Troy and Abed fic, because Troy and Abed.

I thought about it vaguely as an undergrad, but I only started seriously researching & applying after I'd graduated. I had a real job, so it kind of kicked me into gear.

That's sort of where I am, only I haven't started my real job yet. What made you decide for sure that you wanted go to grad school?

(I feel like I always end up asking you for life advice! Er, I hope that's okay.)

I don't know, it wasn't anything specific. I just felt that I ought to go back. That's so fuzzy and unhelpful, I know.

It's not really unhelpful, though. Because I sort of feel fuzzy and unspecific feelings about this a lot, and part of my confusion is knowing whether or not it's okay to act on unspecific things? I don't know, I just wish I felt more certain. : P

I think there's an important difference between specificity and certainty here. I didn't have a specific reason I could point to and say, "This! This is why I'm going back!" - but I was certain about the decision.

If you aren't certain why you want to go, I don't think that's necessarily a problem (though it will make writing applications tough.) If you aren't certain whether or not you want to go, then don't go quite yet.

That makes a lot of sense. Thanks for the advice!
