Harriet Tubman Trio

Even before the era of homeland security, traveling with a bassoon was not fun, having to explain to airport personnel that the case of large-bore tubes was a musical instrument that they had never heard of. Even bringing a guitar often requires special pleading. So I didn't have an instrument to bring to the workshop at the Stone with the Harriet Tubman Trio. It was enlightening nonetheless. A more traditional participant, drummer, made a comment about their style of playing (maybe he mentioned ECM, I don't remember) that was taken by the group as bordering on insulting. During an unstructured jam by some 8 of the participants, including this drummer, he was playing a loud rock beat disregarding the other players; in a lull the guitarist Brandon Ross says to him, "I'd just like you consider the word 'modulate'". Ten-second stare down. "So you're saying I should change it up," the drummer guy says. In the next segment he does a little of what he must have considered 'changing it up'. The guy is persistent, though. In Q&A he asks the question that gets the most interesting, elaborate responses: "So does everything have time?"
