He wants to at least tell Singer, his best friend, because he’s never really kept anything from him.
Ian stands and falls in behind him though, so Cash realizes that there’s no avoiding the conversation that’s to come. Instead of continuing further, he turns to face his lover, trying to keep his face hard, keep his eyes unhappy. He’s always had trouble staying angry at Ian.
Ian looks sad, his gaze on the floor. Even his hair seems to have a little less bounce to it than it had earlier, as he’d ridden Cash in the change room as Johnson set up his drum set and Singer warmed up his voice. Cash had no idea where Marshall had been, but he hadn’t been in the room with them, so that was all that mattered.
Cash wants to reach out, pull Ian’s body to his and wrap his arms around Ian’s smaller frame. He doesn’t though, because that would be admitting defeat, that would be like saying that he agrees with Ian and they should continue to keep it a secret. He doesn’t think that and he doesn’t agree with Ian, so he doesn’t move forward, just holds his iron gaze.
“I thought about what you said,” Ian mumbles. His voice is barely above a whisper and Cash has to strain his ears to hear him because of all the backstage bustle. “I thought about it and… you know I don’t want to tell them but… if… if you want to tell them that badly, then I think we should. Just… can we not tell anyone else, not yet?” Ian continues to stare at the floor as he says this and Cash actually feels his jaw drop. He really hadn’t thought that Ian would agree to telling them despite the fact that they’ve been fucking around for the past six months, been actual boyfriends for three.

“I just don’t want to lose you…” Ian replies. Ian isn’t usually like this, usually he’s the life of the party, the fun, crazy guy that everyone loves. Cash can count on his fingers the amount of times he’s actually seen Ian be serious about something. One of the times was when they’d finally had the conversation, defined what they actually were to each other. This is another of them. “Fuck, Cash.”
Cash leans in a little, kisses Ian’s hair. “I don’t want to lose you either,” he says, “but I don’t want to lose them and I think they deserve to know.”
Ian nods against him, nose against his neck. It’s cold from the chill of this tiny ass room at the rear of the venue. Cash just holds him tighter. “We’ll tell them later, after the show. That way, if they have issues, it won’t fuck up the set.”
“They won’t have issues, baby. That’s why I want to tell them. Besides, I’m pretty sure Singer’s got something going on with Johnson, maybe Marshall too.” Cash grins at Ian even though Ian’s head is still buried in his shoulder, fingers still grasping at him.
Ian chuckles, pulls away and looks at Cash. “That’s funny,” he says and the amusement goes all the way up to his eyes. He goes serious again and leans forward. Cash can feel his breath against his lips, hot and moist. “Cash?” he asks.
“Yeah?”
“We have to go but… I…” Ian pauses, his eyes are searching, kind of worried looking. “I love you, Cash Money.” He blushes bright and looks down. This is the first time that Ian has said it.
Cash brings one of his hands up, lifts Ian’s chin and kisses him, fast and deep. When he pulls back, he smiles at Ian. He’s kind of thrilled about this new development. He’s wanted to say the same thing to Ian for a while now. “Hey, we have to go but… I kind of love you too, a lot.”
Ian’s grin is huge and his eyes are bright. He kisses Cash back, pulling him close by the collar of his hoodie. At this point, Cash doesn’t even care if they do end up telling the rest of the band or not, he just wants Ian and if that means keeping this quiet for the next month or so, he can deal with that.
