Y HALO THAR ELJAY. 8D;; Long time no see!

Watched the premier (here in Sweden) of Star Trek♥XI last friday.

Anyone else here (Trekker? First time ST-fan?) feel like discussing it/ranting about it? Any thoughts, positive, negative, bland, anything... I welcome everything since my feelings are quite mixed as well.

Just gonna branch off your 2-cents and possibly conjure up some of my own in the process --

I actually went to the bathroom [I tried so hard not to!!! and made my dash as quickly as possible!] during the part where said Olsen came into the picture. I left to go right when Pike had rounded up the troops -- and then came back in when they were about to jump outta the shuttle. I heard my friends loling about him wearing the red suit and how he was gonna die though! I dun really have much to say about him being a whatever character [since I wasn't aware that he was?] though someone did have to kick the bucket to intensify the situation, I'd say?

Though not knowing if there was any TOS claimed relations between Spock and Uhura... I did find it rather WTF??? during their first moment with one another. Frankly, that made me shifty towards Uhura with the unsettling description of slut... and that didn't sit well with me. I was like "wait... he was your teacher... and now you're macking on him? D: Whaaaat???" And then I had a lol moment where I was thinking "oh... well now I can see why you didn't make with Kirk... he's not your type ahahaha~ oh maaan..." But yah, I agree... it did feel a bit too much of "LETS GET TO THE POINT" instead of easing us into the potential... and since you say that there's a sequel in the works [WOOHOO!] I would rather have seen the subtleties in THIS movie... and then add on the spice in the NEXT movie...

FOR SERIOUS. BYE BYE VULCAN. I think I just kind of accepted it because I was both thinking that they were playing off of some storyline in the actual series... but also thinking "wait... I... don't... think that should happen...?" It was rather "AND NOW ITS GONE" with the reaction of "EXCUSE ME?"

My friends and I joked about the whole alternate universe/changing history shabang afterwards and claimed that this is their way of saying, "even if we aren't accurate on what's really supposed to go on in Star Trek -- we can cover our tracks now that we've altered history!!!" LoL~~

My favorite parts of the movie definitely had to be ALL of the scenes with Simon Pegg, the entire scenario involving sneaking Kirk onto the ship, and Kirk/Spock moments. I'm not terribly far into the TOS series at the moment, but I think Spock is probably my fave chara atm [I can't say Scotty because I'm biased towards Simon Pegg lol]... I have a weird place in my heart for the disjointed characters in the ST universe... seeing as my fave characters in other ST series have been Data and 7 of 9... DS9 went through a wormhole with me or something because my favorite charas were Dax and Bashir 8) Odo had too much of a stick up his arse ;X

I'm on a total ST trip now [it's really bad timing since Fanime is just around the corner; less than 2 weeks!]... so I'm on a conquest to get through all of TOS and then relive TNG, DS9 and Voyager. I tested the waters on Enterprise a while back... but it didn't latch on to me... but... we'll see how I feel once I get around to it. I still long for them to make a movie for DS9 and Voyager ;C

So far TOS is pretty awesome, but it's got me holding back amused, but appreciative lols at the technology used in this era. Since starting on a later gen, it's just interesting to see them use more manual related devices. The outfits are pretty amazing cuz the seamstress!nerd in me is going "... I could TOTALLY find that trim at the fabric store" or "I see how you hemmed that!!!" -facepalm- And it being made in the 70's just adds the cherry on top. But I'm having a baaaaaaaaall with it though. But I gotta restrain myself from marathon-ing too much of it in a given day since... yah... 8D;; I has other things I also need to doooooo~~

Regarding Olsen: He was a minor character with little or no value, and in the spirit of Trek (especially TOS) his life had to be sacrificed to create the proper atmosphere (e.i. Redshirt), sure :P But I was mostly peeved, not at the way he dies, but how he goes about it. He just annoyed me. But that's not really important, since he isn't! :D

Spock / Uhura: There wasn't really much of any relationship in TOS. Of course Kirk went around "charming" and being charmed by alien ladies a lot... but he always falls back on his T'hy'la (Vulcan for friend/brother/lover ;D), Spock. ♥
Spock & Uhura had some scenes that could be interpreted as, very vaguely, "something".. but I think it's stretching it far to compare it with the movie, cause they took it to a new lever completely. And I definite, definitely, defined, divinity, defiant, definitive, define, finite, defiantly, definer, deficit, defines agree that their first moment was quite surprising! And I totally agree with you about rushing it, but we'll just have to accept it as NewTrek. ^^;

surprises: Both Vulcan's destruction & Kirk's dad's death were quite the shocker for me. And filmatically speaking I wanted more time to take it in (and cry dammit) but the plot just rushed onwards. (I actually cried when Spock was punching the lights out of Kirk instead, that's when it seriously hit me that Vulcan probably wasn't coming back, and that Kirk & Spock's relationship is different in STXI).

Continuity: Me and my friends were also talking about the AT/AU and how it really made things different for the writers. I think it was a natural and good decision for them to make, to create more room for change.... but that doesn't change the fact that I get sad everytime I think about how much this changes things. It could virtually mean that nothing of the ST-canon necessarily needs to be considered canon in the new timeline.... which also means that people/things I have come to love might not be part of this ST-timeline. :( And Grr, I got a bit irked at Prime-Spock when he told Scotty the transwarp transport-formula, since he then he altered that timeline even more by inventing the formula himself.... not a big thing, but Scott(!) was supposed to be the one to invent it, and Spock ought to know better than to prevent him from inventing it. In First Contact Picard c/o even went to the trouble of making sure that Zefrad Cochrane still invented Warp drive (I happened to like the TOS episode "the City on the Edge of Forever" which deals with cause-and-affect-timeloop :O)... I know that this movie supports string theory, which I also find fascinating, but stiiiiiiill *whine*

Olsen: LoL, yah... he did come off as somewhat of a dumbnut. Watching it for like the 3rd...4th... time, I really get to pick up on more things throughout the movie that I didn't notice the first time. And Olsen's lack-there-of has become definitely more apparent to me. Why would you want to cut your chances of landing to mere inches?? Bragging rights?? Most illogical. [:P]

Spock/Uruha: I'm about halfway through the first TOS series and I've come across those snippets in episodes that you linked me too, and even then, I didn't think much of any potential Spock/Uhura. And it's slowly starting to bug me in relation to the movie... XD; There's definitely hardcore!Kirk/Spock though 8) With some McCoy for flavoring, lol. I nearly died of awesomeness when I saw this. I was so thinking what Kirk was thinking... before he thought it. And then I smirked so slyishly when he did XD In any case, like you said, gotta accept the Spock/Uruha as NewTrek... ;X No use getting our shorts all up in a bundle when we could be enjoying the continuation of the franchise, in whatever limelight.

Losses: Very true -- there was def. minuscule time to mourn losses :/ Thinking about it now, things like the aforementioned are what make the movie exciting. Without that big surprises, I think the movie wouldn't have felt as adventurous and epic as it could've. And it most certainly wouldn't have appealed to non-trekkies. So sorry Romulus, you had to go! But then you had to be a sore loser and take Vulcan down with you. Nuh-uh, not very niiiiice~ I actually never liked Romulans... so... :P

Kirk/Spock: I was talking to a friend of mine about the movie the other day and when we got to the Kirk/Spock "EYE KEEL U" scene, her -- being a trekkie since TOS -- said that she didn't like how quickly and unoriginal the trigger was to get Spock all emotional. I didn't say much about the latter since I never had a problem with how Spock got his ruffles fluttered. And in fact, thinking about it more after the math, I still don't have a problem with it. Mainly since it makes sense for the storyline with prime!Spock basically telling Kirk that he is said over the loss of his planet and it's obvious that Spock confined in his Mom. I think anything else would've been out-of-place. What do you think? ;X

Continuity: Well, the unfortunate side of making room for changing stuff -- is making sure that you're still keeping everything consistent for the world of ST and also in line of protocols for cinematic success. Though I too was "awaaah???" when Spock gave Scotty the formula... after watching it several more times afterwards, it had to be done to keep the story going the way that they had written it. So if we dun want that part to happen, they'd have to backtrack and change up the prior events so everything stays fluid. It's a difficult fruit to slice, IMO, but I guess with going the AU route... you gotta kinda bend the rules a bit... :D;; Though you do bring up a good point with First Contact... that is very true... I supposed yes, they could've done the same in this movie. Actually, yes. I def. agree with that. Write to the producers and tell them to watch First Contact, lol XD Which... btw... I still have on VHS, LOL. One day I'll find the DVD version of it... till then, it's one of the reasons why I still own a VCR hahaha...~~ X)

Since I'm a rambling nerd, there is more......... ;D

On Relationships: I wanted more Kirk/Spock moments dammit!! :'D Whether you ship them or just like them as friends, Kirk, spock (& Mccoy!) are just sooo... ahh! I just hope they have get more together screentime + their relationship evolves more! I had a lot of fav parts, can't really point to one particular right now. Though I did squee when Prime-Spock emerges on Delta Vega and goes "you have been and shall always be my friend" to Kirk!! I also liked the part at the end when Prime-Spock seeks out Spock, it was amusing when he said "As my customary farewell would seem oddly self serving, I will simply say... good luck." XD

Easter Eggs: When you get further in to TOS I'm sure you'll catch Loads of references that were subtly dropped in the movie (a nice nod-of-the-head) like e.i.: Delta Vega (named after the planet in "where no man has gone before" as an easter egg), YoungSpock's bullies (there were thee bullies in the animated series as well) as well as a bunch of other stuff.

TOS is both wonderful, yet really corny and obviously OLD in terms of a lot of things. But it IS still really amusing and educational ;3 It would be awesome to have TOS-outfits XD I have too been thinking about making a ST-related costume, but still haven't actually gone about doing it.

I wish I could watch Trek with you, have an all-nighter and then ramble endlessly about silly stuff! :D I don't have anyone I can rant about that kind of stuff with here really D: (especially not slash XD)

Aahhhh Maaan! I could ramble on all night about ST when I've gotten started on it. I too have a new burst of ST crave, so re-watching TNG right now. And the occasional Animated-series episodes as well :D (my friends got the dvd for me a couple of years ago, but I never finished watching all of it!) Even though largely AS isn't considered canon it makes me so happy that I can follow Kirk c/o (TOS spirit) a little more. Gah, I need to re-watch the movies too! Especially "the voyage home" which is awesome. Have you watched any of the old movies (I~VI)? :D :D :D ;;

Kirk/Spock: You should def. know that I'm right there with you on wanting more of this, haha. I think there shall def. be more in the next movie. I think they did a good job of building their relationship. Leonard Nimoy rocked my socks with his reprisal. I'm sure it through Kirk into a whirlpool with having to deal with uptight!Spock and then getting a taste of compassionate!Spock. I looooooved the whole scene where prime!Spock was informing Kirk that he can't tell young!Spock about him and Kirk is all flipping out cuz he doesn't know what to do, lol. And yah, I agree, haha, the farewell scene was amusing too -- "it'd be selfish to tell myself to live long and prosper, so instead, peace out homie!"

TOS: The first... 13 episodes were spent adjusting to the fact that I'm watching a late-70's series [my. my... how faaaaar we've come, lol], the slow development of characters and their relations and settling into ST, in its franchise pitching. But I think after the Shore Leave episode, things have finally begun to pick up, now that they've gotten all the preliminaries outta the way. I watched The Galileo Seven last night and wanted to strangle Spock for saying logical/illogical like 80 billion times... I'm at a loss as to whether that was supposed to be a playful joke on Spock or if it was serious business. Cuz he did say it a god-awful amount of times... and even the crew members were like OMGWTFSTFU with your logic! And I could've sworn he said it like 5 times in a sentence at one point... hopefully it was a joke from the writers because... if not... that's just poor writing XD; Cuz then that makes it seem like Spock has a lack-there-of in his supposedly extensive vocabulary. But I'll reside with it being a joke... cuz it was funny watching the crew members flip out... 8)

If you made a TOS cosplay, who'd you be? Same friend I mentioned earlier told me that someone she knows is actually gonna manufacture a replica fabric from the movie. That's intriguing! We were talking about TOS cosplay and I said I wouldn't mind doing it for a strictly photoshoot purpose. I wouldn't wear it to a con or anything, but it'd be exciting to get together for photoshoot purposes. I'd totally pimp it as Spock 8) Though anyone [Scotty, McCoy, Kirk... you won't see me as Uruha though :P] would be awesome to play as. Maybe one day, when I finally get my ass out to Europe, we should plan a ST cosplay, lol, and just go out and take pics and be neeeeeeerds~

LoL, well it would def. be more exciting to watch the series with someone. Too bad we continue to face one biiiiig problem *waves from North America* I too have very limited about of people I can talk to about ST slash. Mostly because my friends that are into the series, are friends from school and such... and one in particular, I already know is gung-ho about his fandoms because he nearly bit my head off when I said the hobbits in LOTR are gay for each other... XD;;;

And if I can be truly honest for a smidget, I'm feeling conflicted about the excitement that this ST movie has erupted. Well, for ME, it's awesome. Because it reminds me why I love ST so much. Gets me all nostalgic because it has been a franchise that I've been a fanatic for quite some time.... but like, I remember back in the day when being a trekkie was considered way too geeky, uncool and you'll-never-get-laid. But with this ST movie having a more military, edgy and adventurous standpoint, it's more appealing and less geeky, IMO. So therefore, it blurs the boundary between sci-fi nerd and your average joe. Now I'm not saying "omg my fandom is getting popular, oh hell no!" But I do feel with this movie, its become a trendsetter. Maybe it's just the initial hype... and I dun wanna be a hypocrite about it since the tables could very well be turned on me in regards to LOTR and Harry Potter. In any case, the boom is awesome for the franchise! -- though I guess, as a long-time fan, it almost feels ridiculous to me to see everyone and their mother blabbing away about ST when before it all, there was like... a person or two for me to ramble about with. But like I said, I dun wanna be a hypocrite... but I can't deny my confliction and I wanted to get that off my chest... so you seemed like the appropriate reciprocate... 8D;; LoL, maybe that quiz was right about me being Spock. So conflicted and just wanting to be logical, lolol.

I've been catching eps of TNG on this channel that shows several episodes throughout the week. Eventually I wanna find a source for the series and marathon it like I am with TOS. And then eventually... I'll get through the entire franchise, LOL. That'll take some time though... but ah well, long time project, lol. I actually never watched the animated series, but it sounds exciting, haha. I haven't watched any of the old movies, YET... I have the first two d/led, but I wanna get through the first season before I tackle those movies 8) All this week I've been antsy to pop in First Contact though, lol. I wanna own all the TNG movies, but I just haven't gotten around to hunting them down. You watched ST: Insurrection, yes? Did you WTFBBQ about the ending?? I was in disbelief FOR HOURS... they set up the ending for a potential continuum, but the cast is way too old now... XD;;
