so on my budget, i've been watching a lot of the roomie's movies, them being free and all. and let me just say, bless her heart, shelley has horrible taste in movies. i mean, just terrible. this weekend's selections have been domino and stigmata, and man, does it make me wish i weren't broke. she is capable of identifying a good movie (she's a big fan of amelie, por ejemplo), but what cracks me up is the way she is totally convinced that some of these are great films. like when i watched ravenous. now, i'm a big fan of bad horror movies. i revel in their badness, i love laughing at them. this is the attitude i brought to ravenous, a historical horror film about post-civil war soldiers who like eating each other in the wilds of california. and the film did not disappoint. lots of footage of guys running through the snowy woods, hiding out in caves, and trying to kill each other for a gourmet dinner (or to avoid becoming said gourmet dinner), complete with an overlay of manufactured native american myth that's supposed to give some sort of depth, i guess, and set to the tune of a strangely upbeat soundtrack that sounds like it was made on a synthesizer in an elevator sometime in the mid-80s.
when i told shelley that i had watched it over the weekend while she was away, i was ready to launch into a whole spiel about how funny it was. but she was so excited, because turns out, it's one of her favorite movies, and she "just thinks it's so smart." i just shut my mouth. and kept it shut. apparently she read on the internet somewhere that the filmmakers were using the music as a way to show the perspective of the killer as opposed to the victim. now, i would not have associated that music with either the killers or the victims, or with anything in the movie at all. but shelley was impressed.
understand, she's not stupid. pretty naive sometimes, but not stupid. it confounds how much she likes some of these movies. i mean, not just likes, but respects. there are a lot of bad movies that i like (there's my whole fascination with the apocalyptic disaster film) but i never claim that they're good. just that i like them. it can only be partially explained by her bizarre attraction to guy pearce. what about the other half of her dvd collection? i don't know, but with current budget constraints, i'm sure i'll be finding out.
