"All we have to believe with is our senses, the tools we use to perceive the world; our sight, our touch, our memory. If they lie to us, then nothing can be trusted. And even if we do not believe, then still we cannot travel in any other way than the road our senses show us; and we must walk that road to the end."

on cause and effect and time and senses:
here he asserts that memory is a sense,
some would say that memory is a sense independant of time - as in when one remembers somthing most peopel beleive that it is not physically reacuring in the time framwork. it is independent of the given reality in that sense. one memory however can change at any given moment, in that our beleifes in the present effect the way in which we remember somthing; and the beleifes we have about a memory change the beleifs about the present. therefor its a constant rewriting of both the present and the past and also the future[in that our beleifes about past memories effect our cohices and beleifs about what is going to occur in our future and the choices that eventually result in our future]
in this way it seems there is no form of linear cause and effect, becuease cause and effect generally imply a begining and end of affectaion, and if our beleifes are constantly reajusting our memories and our memories are constnatly effecting our choics and the "road our senses show us" and there is a multidementional sense to it, non-linear that is, then cause and effect cannot occure in memory, becuase that would imply an end to the writing and reajustments of the way one veiws memory --which even in the case of history is constantly proved, now we here over and over again about people wanting to look back thorugh history and point out our "false" beleifs and re-right a more "politclly correct" form of history [this is my best friend's goal in life, to reveal what 'true' history says] and this change of the memory of history comes about by the current beleifs witch likewise feed on the beleifs of the past which fuil reavaluations, causing a back and forth tetherball of our current beleifs feeding what we remember and what we remember feeding our beleifs in the current time, which is contrary to cause in affect because there is no set cause persay within the senses or within the memory itself ---there is no starting point of memory [what is your very first memory for sure? are u certain that u no longer retain any memories that came before it? how do you know that other fragments of memory from an early age existed after this "first memory"]
then if memory is a sense, and all senses are similar in this way
then senses cannot be defined by cause and effect at all and hold no real realation to cause, only a constant state of affectation.
but can memory be equaited in this memory to senses?
reading through these posts, my own, others, i try to integrate them all in my mind, but the problem i think is that we are all useing the same words with different meanings in mind ---[*laughs* which goes into entirly different reagions about meaning as a sense, or at least a sort of second degree sense, in that our senses effect the meaning we give to words, our memory comonly tells us how to define a word --and so it woudl seem that possibly that a defination of a word is a sense in some manerisms, "tool we use to perceive the world" ...but thats a whole nother issue]
sorry alec, to maney thoughts mulling aroudn my head on this one, didnt plan on saying this much, but its 4 am and i have nothing better to do but think about things like this!
good quote! really good quote
