In light of the recent news coverage of the ongoing crisis in the Democratic Republic of Congo, I would like to ask everyone who happens to read this blog to take the time to seek out and watch
The Greatest Silence: Rape in the Congo. People need to acknowledge and understand the sorts of atrocities which go on in a war zone.
These are not isolated incidents by any means.
Similar horrific acts were perpetrated during the wars which marked the break-up of the former Yugoslav Republic, and doubtless during the various Persian Gulf Wars as well. Wherever there is "ethnic cleansing", there usually also is systematic rape, and east-central Africa has seen its share of both.
More than half a million Tutsi tribesfolk died in the
Rwandan Genocide. Echoes of that conflict continue to this day. This has been going on twice as long as the so-called "War on Terror". So please watch this film. It may make you sick to your stomach. It may make you angry. Hopefully it will do both, and spur you to talk to others about it. Because this must end.
Must.
