Character History:
HEADS-UP: This game has quite a few plotholes. I don't know if it's because of poor storytelling or maybe a sequel is coming up, but I'll try to mention things that have been left unexplained so the background info doesn't look incomplete.
Cole McGrath was a bike courier for Empire City. One day, he's asked to take a package to the city center and open it. It turns out to be a bomb, taking out several city blocks and killing 10,000 people. Cole, being in the center, mysteriously survives. After escaping the blast site, he collapses. Trish nurses him back to health over the course of the days which Cole describes as "society commiting suicide".
The bomb spreads a plague, which the government responds to by quarantining the city with no access in or out. Stuck in a cage, theft, murder, and other crimes happen all over.
A few days later Cole wakes up in the hospital, where he discovers that the bomb has given him electric superpowers. The bomb, known as the Raysphere, gave him these by absorbing the energey of the people around it and concentrating it into one person. Cole learns to control his powers and lives on the roof of an apartment with Zeke and Trish. Amy, Trish's sister, died in the blast. Trish distances herself from Cole emotionally, blaming him for the blast like everyone else in the city.
Cole and Zeke lead in an attempt to escape the city, when police intercept and open dire. In his escape he meets a government agent named Moya. Her husband, John, also an agent, is missing somewhere in the city and she asks Cole to go back and find him and the Raysphere. In exchange, she would get him out of the city.
Cole goes back and starts his investigation with Moya and Zeke's help. In the process he meets Kessler, another man with powers and Cole's nemesis. He happens to be the cause of the blast.
As a hero, Cole also reconciles with Trish and gets back together with her.
During the hunt and occasional appearances by Kessler, John suddenly calls Cole (it's not explained how he gets in contact with him) snf asks him to meet. Turns out Moya was lying to look sympathetic--John was never married and didn't know any Moya. This whole thing is largely left unexplained in the plot, but leaves Cole to wonder who he's supposed to trust. For the moment, in order to find the Rayspheere (which John wants to destroy), he follows John's orders.
Kessler starts ruining Cole's relationships in the process. Upon finally finding the Raysphere with Zeke, Zeke betrays Cole and goes with Kessler in hopes of also getting superpowers. Escaping with Zeke and the Raysphere, Kessler also kills Trish, deteriorating Cole into an alone, pissed-off man with super powers. Nevertheless Cole vows revenge for Trish and also swears to protect the people of Empire City. Yet another investigation and in-game missions later (which are generally 'destroy this' and 'find that' missions that step-by-step bring you to larger events) John and him find the Sphere. Cole finally destroys it, though the blast caused in destroying it kills John.
Completely alone now Cole goes after Kessler, meeting him where the Raysphere went off and caused the whole mess. They fight, and at one point Zeke intervenes to protect Cole despite his betrayal. Kessler uses his psychic powers to toss him aside. The fight continues, with Kessler taunting Cole with things about Trish. Things Kessler shouldn't know. When Cole defeats him, Kessler reveals that he and Cole McGrath as the same person. Kessler, with powers, (unexplained), has a nemesis called the Beast (also unexplained). Rather than fight it, Kessler fled with his family. The Beast catches up and kills his family. Kessler uses his powers to go back in time and plans. He plans the Raysphere, Trish's death, Zeke's betrayal, and Cole delivering the bomb--all to make Cole strong with no emotional attachments. All to prepare him for the Beast. Kessler!Cole married Trish, Cole would have married her in the future, as he finds out. Kessler asks Trish to forgive him, and dies.
Despite hating everything about Kessler, his doubts on being a hero to those in the city (which he has still trapped in, as he's stopped listening to Moya), being along in the city (his relationship with Zeke severely strained, he says he'll be ready for the Beast.
Point in Canon: "Hero" Timeline, after Cole rescues Trish from the hospital roof.
Character Personality: Before the blast Cole was a normal man with a good life. Even with a crappy job he joked around with his best friend Zeke over some cold beer and spent time with his close girlfriend Trish. But incidents can change people. Sometimes for the better, sometimes for the worst. Abraham Lincoln said "If you want to test a man's character, give him power", which the game inFAMOUS is about. It gives you an ordinary man powers, and you have the choice to make him good (Hero) or evil (Infamous), which can drastically alter Cole's personality. To make things simple, I'm playing hero!Cole.
Whether or not you're good or bad, Cole's main personalities sticks, and even good Cole considers doing "bad" sometimes. He is not your stereotypical "superhero" in the first place, and sometimes he's uncertain whether or not he wants to be. Despite a strong sense of justice, he is cynical, sarcastic, and quick to anger--sometimes to the point of violence. The authority figures that come to play in the story become suspicious, making Cole wary of power figures, and doesn't know who to trust. He eventually becomes sick of following orders and being an "errand boy" and takes matters into his own hands, showing us he is strong-willed. He is generally street-smart and sensible, following both his head and his heart, though he tends to lean more toward his heart.
As a hero Cole doubts if he can protect people sometimes, and that he can't live up to the hero standards everyone has when they think of heroes.
Cole is a sensible guy with a good head on his shoulders. He's not a braniac but he knows what his powers can do for him--thus why you are presented with choices. Cole can use his powers for himself or to help others. Even if he uses his powers for himself, some "Evil" actions he chooses are for the benefit of people he cares about, like stealing food for Trish and Zeke. That's not to say he's a perfect, misunderstood angel, but you know that thing about the road to hell being paved with good intentions. Regardless of the reasons for the initial "evil" choices Cole can go completely psycho and power-hungry if you keep chosing "evil" choices. Back to the point, no matter what you choose, Cole knows he has great powers in his hands and knows what he can do with him. He's not stupid.
When relaxed, and not in death-defying-save-the-city situations, Cole is pretty casual. Cynical and bad-tempered, yes, but loyal to the people he cares about. He's extremely protective and would do anything for his friends and family. Sometimes he gets protective to the point of violence, as whenever his enemies threaten Zeke or Trish he will either swear them dead or quietly mumble threats to them. Either way Cole has a good sense of humor, though, and would rather have a cold beer with Zeke and Trish than anything else.
Character Plans: Cole will be worried for everybody in the conditions back home, but he'll probably try and see if he can find a way out (unsuccessfully) and find out what the hell is up with that place. He'll use the Darkness to practice using his powers, and probably finally give in and get a job and see what he can do with his life here.

[Flickering video feed shows a man lying on the ground in a puddle. Something seems to be moving around him, but the disrupted video makes it difficult to tell what's going on with the unmoving, yellow-jacketed man.]
...Uh...
[The video steadies long enough to show him stirring. He carefully lifts himself up. Around him, sparks dance on top of the puddle. The young man sits up, apparently unaffected by the electricified pool of water, looking around. Unlike most people, the newcomer doesn't seem to be affected by the new scenario...
He reaches for a cell phone on the strap across his chest and presses a button. A beep follows, and the man puts his hand down and lifts himself up. Only his feet are visible now, and he walks away from the video feed.]
Hey, Moya, I think I'm in the Warren...
[As he steps away from the puddle, the sparks instantly stop.]
Third Person Sample
Cole leaned against the wall, entertaining himself by passing a dancing bolt of electricity between his hands back and forth. He never considered himself an A student, but after getting these powers, boy did he start paying attention to science. Particularly on electricity. Some things applied to his abilities. Obviously water and electricity didn't mix, and he wasn't going swimming anytime soon. But some laws of science he learned he could defy.
Kind of like the fact that he was doing this. Passing miniature bolts from one hand to the next, watching as the current hand would become encircled with electricty. And it didn't hurt. He had become a literal lightning rod. He quietly thanked whoever made electricity. Thomas Edison? No, that was the lightbulb, not...
Whatever.
He didn't mind his new surroundings. They weren't much different from Empire City. It was quieter too, for the most part. Nobody screaming at him and nothing try to kill him. At least, not ALL the time. The only thing that pissed him off was he had things to do. Places to be.
...Trish to see again.
