Cultural Appropriation--Bellydancing

Mar 17, 2009 13:01

I should be able to handle this on my own, I know, but I really need to find out how others see it.

I was about to offer some bellydancing gear on the auction for help in WisCon attendance. I sell these things in my store in western MA, and yes, I've considered the CA aspect before and come to my own conclusions. The women I know who are involved in bellydancing (women of various ethnicities) see it as a very woman-centered tradition, which doesn't excuse appropriation, but I I've never run into any objections. I see that WisCon, in fact, has a bellydancing event.

Cutting to the chase, I'm probably not going to stop selling bellydancing accoutrements in my store, although I could be open to persuasion, but is it particularly inappropriate to offer them in this particular auction?

Thanks in advance for your views, of whatever flavor.
