Specific Cultural Appropriation Question: Sarongs

Apr 07, 2009 09:02

I have a lot of sarongs. I don't wear them for any other reason than because they're one of the very few skirt styles that fit my body well and I enjoy brightly colored fabric. I was showed the correct way to tie them by a Malaysian friend of mine several years back, so I have at least a reasonable idea that I'm wearing them in an appropriate manner.

My question is: Is it appropriate for me to wear sarongs, period? Basic googling says that they don't have any specific religious connotations. I already knew that they're considered primarily a man's garment, but I haven't heard anything saying that they're inappropriate for women to wear as well.

I'd very much appreciate comments. I'll happily repurpose my sarongs if wearing them is considered offensive.
