A Simple Moment

Guinevere stood solitary in front of the long mirror examining her form and let out a sigh. Her hair was a mess, the picture of untidiness. She had pushed it up into a sloppy bun, finding the feeling of a trail of curls brushing against her bare back extremely irritating. While this had solved the problem of the evil curls that were out to make her go crazy, she now looked like she’d been hit by a full force gale. Wisps of curls were protruding out, fluttering against the skin of her ears and the base of her neck every time she made the slightest of movements. The hair that had followed her direction and stayed in place was frizzed up, making it look like she had twice the amount. A gentle breeze came in from the window causing the loose curls to brush against her skin once more. In a momentary spat of anger and with a frustrated groan Gwen yanked her bun lose and threw the tie onto the dresser to her right.

“Fiiiiiiiinnnnnneeee, seeing as you are so persistent in your pursuit to annoy me, I’ll leave you down” she said through gritted teeth before sighing and realising she may have somewhat overreacted. Picking up the brush she ran it through her dark locks again, trying to smooth down the frizz and then, slowly this time, she redid her bun till she was satisfied; making sure that each and every curl was tucked away. Once that was done she re-started her examination, hair…fine... finally. Body.

Gwen gradually turned sideways examining her profile up and down repeatedly, knowing full well that the more she studied it the more the sight would irk her but she was unable to resist the temptation. She was huge, no huge didn’t quite cover it; she was massive, absolutely massive. Her whole body was changed in someway, her face was fuller, and her breasts were enlarged and firmer. Even her fingers and toes had swollen up slightly though Arthur swore up and down that was just her imagination, ignorant man. Her abdomen was the most affected though, sprouting out from just below her breast line and continuing out and round in one giant arch, so that Gwen could no longer look down at her feet, filled up with a budding life.

She was wearing a pair of black trousers that where pulled up just below her plump belly and Arthur’s lose fitting red shirt. There was a reason for her attire and it wasn’t because it was comfy…though it was and it had the strong scent of Arthur and well… having his scent surrounding her all day wasn’t the most unpleasant thing in the world she decided. No, the reason was their young son Duran and his obsession with kissing and cuddling the baby or in reality her stomach at the oddest of moments.

He’d be happily playing with his friends or sword training, only with a blunt wooden sword, he was still far too young to handle anything else and then suddenly he would stop, run over to Gwen encircling his arms around her bump completely out of the blue and place butterfly kisses all over. It melted her heart of course, the first time she’d crushed him to her in a fierce hug with him muffling a desperate plea of “ooopp it um, uuoooooo swashing e” till he wriggled free looking up at her with his bright blue eyes, his father’s eyes, that looked mesmerising against his caramel skin tone in a look that can only be describe as him thinking “she’s lost it.”

However every affectionate gesture he made towards his unborn sibling had to be done with skin to skin contact for Duran believed, bizarre as it was, that the baby could not feel the love though the material of clothes. And well, having your son crawl under your dress or try to yank the dress above your head so he can reach the skin in public places or in front of visiting guests when you’re queen is not something that is appropriate or wanted. So instead Gwen adapted to wearing pants and a shirt, not that she minded, quite the contrary she found it utterly endearing and beautiful that he believed the silly notion, proof that her son really was the most adorable and sweetest little man in the world. Truth be told, she’d been worried about how he would react when they told him she was with child.

Arthur had been overly ecstatic, picking her up and twirling her round laughing from sheer joy and making her giggle out protests for him to put her down before she was sick. Then after placing her feet back on solid ground he dropped straight down on to his knees, pressing his face delicately into her belly as her arms circled themselves around his shoulders, pulling him in closer in a pose that brought back fond memories of the moment she told him about Duran. But Duran had been an only child for a number of years and her fear was he may have been a little disappointed that he’d now have to share his parents with another human being they’d call son, or daughter. Turned out her worries where for nought, he had been tremendously happy over the idea. He had beamed up at them both; blue eyes sparkling with excitement and then after a quick hug to both of them ran straight off to tell his Uncle Merlin and anyone he met on the way that he was going to be a big brother.

Looking in the mirror Guinevere could tell she was much bigger this time, of course when she’d casually mentioned this to Arthur his inspired reply had been “I don’t know what you’re talking about. You where MASSIVE with Duran”.

He’d left the room muttering about absurd mood swings and how if Merlin wasn’t such an idiot and a pathetic excuse for a friend (he’d long stopped calling him a servant) and gotten there when he told him to, he’d be hunting deer right now and none this would have happened whilst he was rubbing the spot on the back of his head where Gwen’s shoe had hit it with extreme force. She’d apologised later though in floods of tears, wrapped in his embrace after he’d brought back ten bouquets of her favourite wild flowers, saying in between sobs how wonderful and loving he was then proceeded to kiss him with much intention, much to Arthur’s amusement and delight. Gwen smiled slightly at the recalled memories. Suddenly she felt a soft kick in her abdomen and her smile grew wider. Affectionately she rubbed her bump with both hands in soothing circler movements.

“Good morning little one, sleep well?” As if in reply another kick was given far more forcefully this time and Gwen couldn’t help but laugh.

“No. O well it must be getting a bit of tight squeeze in there by now, think you’ll be joining the real world soon” there were no more kicks but she felt a wriggling sensation and knew he, or she was turning around. She took that to mean it hadn’t quite made up its mind. She patted her tummy.

It wouldn’t be long now till their little arrival, did just that, arrive. She was both exceedingly excited and nervous. She knew what to expect this time at least, but with that knowledge also came the facts of the pain. During her first pregnancy she’d had no experience of giving birth and every mother she’d spoken to told her it be fine, a wonderful experience, you’ll never know the intensity of instant love till you have a child and they were right. It still amazed her that she along with Arthur had actually created Duran. That he was a mix of both of them and had simply come out of thin air. That love and other certain pleasurable activities could create such a creature gave her such hope for the world and for the future of Camelot. But what all of the women she’d spoken to had failed to mention was that it hurt…a lot and that it was not a few minutes, but rather hours and hours. Of course when they place your new born child into your arms you forget all about the extremely uncomfortable feelings you just went though, and it was completely worth it, but that didn’t mean it was a walk in the park.

Also the reality was, giving birth was not a safe process, things went wrong more often than she would like and the thought of anything bad happing to this life inside of her caused such a sharp stabbing pain to begin in her heart, she could hardly breathe. Arthur worried over this more than she did; he still carried the fear of his own birth. Though he’d long since learned and come to terms with the truth surrounding it, there was still a shadow that he couldn’t quite get rid of. Gwen shook her head, shaking dark thoughts from her mind and instead thought about what Duran and Arthur were doing, a far more happier subject.

She’d heard the creak of the door and the light pattering of feet on their bedroom floor early in the morning. Had felt the bed sink under the extra weight now placed upon it and a small figure crawling up the bed in the space between her and Arthur. Guinevere had listened through her dream daze to Arthur’s groans of protest as a small voice rang though the silence.

“Father”

“Mmmmmm”

“Time to get up”

Grunting Arthur had rolled over in order to face his son eyes squinting through the light only to reply sleepily “Five more minutes.” then rolled back over pulling the bed sheets higher over his head. Duran had huffed, slapped at his father’s arm before tugging violently fighting for dominance over the bed sheet currently covering Arthur’s head. As he did so Duran whined out.

“Nooooooooo not five more minutes, now, now, nnnnooooowwww.”

Sighing and grumbling Arthur had finally relented unable to listen to his whining any longer. Throwing the sheet back and deliberately doing it in such a wide berth that it fell on top of Duran head’s coving him; much to his son’s delight, had risen with a protest of

“How come your mother gets to lie in?”

Gwen could almost see his bottom lip sticking out in his famous pout. Behind her lids Gwen rolled her eyes but made no sound, knowing full well if she did, she’d be ambushed by both her boys, and two lots of blue puppy dog eyes and matching pouts would force her to get up and really the bed was just too warm and cosy for that. They’d left a few minutes later after Arthur had thrown his day’s attire on, chatting away about this and that. Gwen couldn’t really remember, listing to their deep and high voices mingle into a soothing mumble had sent her back to sleep. Now though she almost wished she had been awake to hear, it would mean less wandering around searching for them. Long walks took at lot of energy now that her belly had grown so large and heavy. To her surprise though just as she was turning away from the mirror the door to her chambers opened and out from behind the door, peeped two fresh blue eyes and a mass of dark brown hair. For a second Duran moved his head round curiously searching for his mother’s silhouette and when he’d found her bounded in and out from behind the oak door.

“You’re up” his voice was as crisp as a bell and rang out through the room at a surprisingly commanding level for such a small person. He definitely learnt that from his father. Even his statue was representative of Arthur, shoulders back, head held high, sturdily built and very authoritative even at his young age. But he also held softness in him, a glow of warm kindness and a smile that could light up any room. Gifts from her so Arthur had said.

“Yes I’m up and what have you been up to then?” Gwen asked as she walked, waddled towards him.

“Weeeeeellllllll,” Duran took a deep breath and then began to ramble on at such an incredible speed that if Gwen wasn’t used to it she’d have missed half the things he said.

“I woke up, came and got dad. He was a grumpy bear and wouldn’t get up, so I had to beat him and do that thing you always say I shouldn’t do, whine, and then he did that thing I do sometimes, like when you wouldn’t let me play anymore because it was time to go to bed, then he got dressed, I helped, then we had breakfast and I told him all about the dream I had where Uncle Merlin was an old man with a long white beard and he wore blue clothes and a funny pointy hat and kept talking to an owl, daddy laughed a lot about that. Then we went for a walk and I got to sit on his shoulders, I was really high up, I could touch the clouds but I wasn’t rude I said hello to all the people we saw and there was this one lady she was really, really, really old, and her skin looked like it was falling off but I didn’t say anything because you said I shouldn’t make comments about other people unless they are nice and I don’t think she would have liked to know she look like a raw chicken, so I just smiled and said good morning and then we went to see Uncle Merlin because daddy had to talk to him about something and he was busy doing something that I don’t understand but it had to do with bottles and weird looking potion stuff, and then him and dad talked about really boring stuff that I don’t remember because it was boring and I told them so but daddy just said “Shh a minute Duran this is important”, so I started tugging at his trousers but he kept patting me away because he’s mean, but then Uncle Merlin made bubbles appear in shapes of animals so I chased around the room trying to catch them, like a hunter. I like Uncle Merlin he’s really fun. Then they finished their boring talk and father said we could go now but I wanted to play with the bubble shapes more, but Merlin he said he was too busy and needed some quiet to do that thing I don’t understand and then the bubbles disappeared, I didn’t think that was nice of Merlin, he’s mean. And then we walked about again and I asked to go on daddy’s shoulders again so he let me but then Leon came over and said something about knights and the kingdom and some other things but I wasn’t listening because I was trying to reach the bird that was flying over head but it was too high and then me, dad and Leon all went back into the castle and dad took me off his shoulders and said he had to do something about the thing Leon was saying that I wasn’t listening to and told me that I should come and play with you instead because I’d be bored and it would take him a bit of time, and I didn’t want to listen to grown ups talk because that’s really boring and not fun at all, so I came here and I opened the door really slowly because I wasn’t sure if you where still sleeping and then I looked and you where awake, which is good because you where asleep for aaaaaages and then you asked me what I did.”

Duran gasped for breath as he finished his tale. Gwen looked at his face which was now slightly red from the strain of saying all that in one long sentence and shook her head affectionately.

“That sounds nice but Duran darling what have I told you about talking so fast.”

Duran still panting looked up at his mother’s face, his eyes growing wide, lips pursing together and his brow scrunching up as he concentrated, trying to find the right answer. Finally he gave up.

“I don’t know.”

Gwen rolled her eyes, selective memory.

“I said to try and speak more slowly because people who aren’t used you and your rambles can’t understand you, when you speak so fast.”

Duran slowly nodded his head and his lips formed an O as he realised his mistake.

“Ok, I’ll try.” and then his face spread out in a cheeky grin, which oddly enough reminded Gwen so much of Merlin, and grabbed at her hand tugging her along and towards the door.

“Can you come play with me now?” Gwen laughed, always on the move this one. She wondered if their new arrival would be as exuberant, she sort of hoped they would even if it would tire her out having two of them like that.

“Wait a second there mister ball of undying energy, I’ve yet to get my morning cuddle and kiss thank you very much.”

Duran reach his arms up and then releasing that Gwen couldn’t bend down due to her enormous bump ran over to Arthur and Gwen’s bed, jumped on it and stood up beckoning Gwen with both arms impatiently.

“Come on mum I want to go outside it’s all warm and sunny.”

Gwen chuckled and waddled her way as quick as possible to the edge of the bed, wrapping her arms around her son’s torso, his legs brushing against her protruding belly. Duran hugged her tight around her neck and kissed her cheek. Planting a few kisses of her own into his cheek Gwen then released him allowing him to jump down from the bed holding her hand and then drag her once more towards the door and the awaiting sunshine.

Just as they where about reach the door Duran suddenly stopped and let go of Gwen’s hand. Just as she was about to ask him what was wrong, he spun around of the spot, grabbed at the red material of her shirt, yanked it up and wrapped his arms as far as they would go around her belly pressing his nose into her belly button and kissing the place his lips touched. Gwen’s heart melted on the spot and she felt a lovely warm sensation spreading through her body. Her son was truly amazing; she didn’t care if she was biased. With one hand Gwen continued to hold up the shirt so it didn’t fall over him and with the other she softly stroked the back of Duran’s head a soft whimsical smile playing on her lips. Duran jumped back suddenly as a kick came for his sibling taking both him and Gwen by surprise. Gwen looked down at her stomach and her smile grew wider.

“I think little one liked that.”

Duran’s shocked face turned into one of pure happiness and delight, he beamed and then tentatively moved back so that his nose barley toughed the skin of her stomach.

“Hello, I hope you come out soon, I need a new play mate.” he whispered his breath tickling the skin it was moving over. Placing a few more butterfly kisses over as much of her abdomen as he could reach he then stood back flashed Gwen a smile, who was trying not to allow her emotions get the best of her, and start sobbing uncontrollably picked up her hand once more and moved out of the door and down the hallway chatting about what they where going to do.
