Sean is sick. He slept in two hours past his normal time, woke up crying about his sore throat and running a 102.3 F fever. (Which came down to 101.3 F after some Motrin.) He did eat some yogurt and seems to be feeling better.
Still, after I gave him the ibuprofen, I was concerned enough to call the med group. I remembered that they had a Saturday morning clinic in pediatrics-- except that when I pushed the number for that option, it just gave me the peds appointment desk and said they were closed. *sigh* So, I called the on-call doc. I really hate calling on-call doctors.
The on call ped was very nice. She took his symptoms and said she would call back in about a half hour to see if his fever was responding to the medicine. She actually did call back, which surprised me a little. When she called back (at about 10:00), she said that if he was eating and drinking we should just wait until Monday-- or take him into the Satuday morning clinic. I told her I tried to call and couldn't get anyone, and THAT'S when she told me the direct number to pediatrics, which you're supposed to know by some sort of psychic power, since it's not referred to anywhere in the phone system or online.
Now, I'm thinking, if *I* were the on-call doctor, and I got a call about a kid on a Saturday morning, when there was a clinic going on where the kid could be seen by a doctor, I would tell the parent to call said clinic when I talked to them. The first time. At 9:15, when I could have called and at least tried to get an appointment.
He's not sick enough for me to take him to the ER and expose him to the illnesses of all the people in the waiting room. Now, all I can do is wait until Monday unless he becomes dangerously ill, and I get to hope that he doesn't give us all whatever he has. AND if he does have strep throat, which is what I suspect he has, he won't be able to go back to school until Wednesday, now, because he'd have to be on antibiotics for 48 hours before he could go.
Damn.
