Thanksgiving

Well. I had a kitchen disaster day on Wednesday. Let's see if I can remember everything that went to heck.

The first thing I went to do was pumpkin pie. Ian and Sean were helping me-- Sean was fetching ingredients and Ian was reading the recipe. I got down the sugar and realized that we were almost out. No big deal, we have a bag in the pantry-- except we didn't, it was a bag of flour. Oops. We had just enough sugar to make the pie, though. Right after I put in what seemed like a rather large amount of ginger, I realized that Ian was telling me 1 and 1/2 tsp. when it was supposed to be 1/2 tsp. Oops. I guess I should have checked what my five year old was telling me when it came to fractions, huh?

So. We went to Meijer to get more sugar. We got a couple of other things while we were there.

The pies turned out great. Then the inlaws came over.

Why is it that whenever someone's around that you want to impress (the mother in law) everything goes to crap? *sigh*

I made pecan tartlets. I misread the recipe and didn't boost the oven temperature before I put them in. Thus, they ended up tasting good, but being dangerous to your dental work. *sigh* Then I tried making a new recipe for Blueberry banana bread that didn't turn out too well. It had grits in it, and the texture was really odd. (Although after it sat overnight, it turned out to be decent.) So I decided to make my regular banana bread. During the baking of said banana bread, I hit the turn the OVEN off button, not the turn the beeping TIMER off button. It turned out to have an odd texture, too, but it tasted pretty good. *sigh*

After they went to the hotel, I made a regulation pecan pie, which, of course, turned out wonderfully since they weren't there. I also made a chocolate meringue pie as a surprise for my father-in-law, since he had mentioned that was his favorite kind of pie.

Thanksgiving dinner started out poorly (the stuffing broth/butter) mixture boiled over while I was upstairs finding the sewing kit for my blind husband), but turned out good. We had 14 people (9 adults and 5 kids) over, and I don't think I could have found a place to put anyone else. The food was good, though, and everyone seemed to have a good time.

BUT right as everyone was leaving, my night started going downhill fast. I got the stomach flu of DOOM. Right down to doubled-over cramps, shaking, miserable. And on top of that, I'm stressing out that I got everyone ELSE sick. I was sick half the night, and in the morning I still didn't feel well. At least I was keeping down food again, though. It took until Saturday for me to get back to the point of feeling hungry again. Yikes.

So far, everyone else is fine. Whew. I'm pretty religious about washing hands and such, so I hope it will stay that way.

The inlaws left Sunday morning early, so Saturday night they gave the kids their presents. We put up the tree for that, so the house is already started decorating for Christmas. IT makes it feel like Christmas is just around the corner-- of course, the way this year has gone, the next time I link, it will be.

So the next little while should be pretty calm. I'm mostly done shopping-- I just have to get my sister and her family.
