Reading Rainbow is having its final episode today.
NPR article here Which makes me sad. I hope that it gets an afterlife in reruns because I want to watch it with my future children.
I was such a voracious reader growing up. Still am. And Reading Rainbow made me feel like it was okay to like reading. That I wasn't a dork with my nose always in a book.
Like the first time I read Harriet the Spy. I fell in love immediately. I was conflicted because I simultaneously wanted to tell everyone I knew to read this fantastic book and keep it all to myself. I've read it probably about a good 30 times since.
I'm just disappointed that it is ending due to lack of funding. It was a show that really did some good, that encouraged a love of reading, and we can't support that as a nation.
Guess we'll have to encourage it as individuals.
