So I've been working on my final paper for History of Psychology (yes, yes, I got an extension. please don't judge me) and it's not turning out quite as I had expected. I'm writing about the social stigma surrounding epilepsy, and how published memoirs and personal narratives have changed and shaped the public's perception of the disorder.
And then I started the actual research phase, and lo and behold there are like 2 personal memoirs about epilepsy. Drats. And really? The public perception hasn't changed significantly. People still think it's fucking contagious. There's no Michael J. Fox of this affliction, lending a big celebrity hand to the cause. There's no Death Be Not Proud of epilepsy.
The one group that does get a gold star is
The Epilepsy Foundation. They pretty much rock. Last year they started a
National Walk for Epilepsy, and I have to admit I'm intrigued. It's a 3.1 mile walk in Washington D.C., this year on March 29th. (Waaaay shorter than that Avon walk crap) I'm just not sure that a 3 mile walk is worth the flight/hotel and such. It would cost me several hundred dollars to do. Not to mention the whole hocking-everyone-I-know-to-donate-money part. But maybe . . .
