Three things:
1) Yesterday my supervisor observed me teach my 9th grade honors English class, and it went really well. The kids recognized that they needed to give me a break and were very attentive and responsive and said a lot of insightful things. I <3 smart kids. (In turn, meaning: I don't <3 not smart kids. I think I shouldn't be a teacher.)
2) In 3rd block (12th grade) today, this obnoxious kid was talking through my whole lesson, and he was bugging the crap out of me. It didn't help when he asked me FOR THE MILLIONTH TIME, "Hey, what's your name?" I told him it was Miss Gockel. It gets better.
"Can I just call you Miss G.?"
"Yes."
"How about just 'G?'"
"No."
"Okay, G! I won't call you G anymore! Thanks, G!"
Oy. I should have known when I allowed the "Miss G" thing that it would backfire with my idiotic students who think they're hilarious. Did I mention this is a 12th grader? Eighteen years old. Even the sixth graders I had last placement weren't so blatantly immature. I couldn't interrupt class to deal with him at the moment, but I caught him on his way out of class and told him I wasn't amused, and that I was not going to accept him calling me "G." But can you imagine saying that to someone? "Don't call me 'G.' It isn't acceptable." Haha... Next time he does it (and he will), I'm writing him up. I hate that kid. Whoever said high schoolers were cool lied.
3) Good story time: Yesterday one of my 12th graders gave me the myspace web address for his "group." He told me he was in a hip-hop band. Or whatever you call it. I went to the site, and they sound pretty good. I told him this today when I saw him after school with one of his band-mates. We ended up discussing Shakespeare (the topic in class at the moment), and my student told me he wanted me to be in a "skit" on his band's CD. He wants me to "Say something smart about Shakespeare, and compare our lyrics to his." He was dead serious. Awesome.
That is all. Carry on.
