The story thus far...
Rachel (Rachey) Bonnett was in a car accident on the night of January 15th 2009 on the way home from covering a shift for some workers who had to attend a staff meeting. Rachel was the passenger in the vehicle. The article in the newspaper is as follows:
-----SIMCOE REFORMER-----
Three passengers sustained serious injuries in a car crash with a tractor trailer Thursday night at Concession 15 and Haldimand Road 55 in the former township of Walpole, Haldimand County.
Haldimand OPP say that at about 7 p.m., a blue 1998 Ford Explorer SUV operated by Bonnie Potts, 39, of Waterford with three female passengers was travelling southbound on Concession 15. The Ford Explorer slid through the intersection at Haldimand Road 55 and struck the axle of a fully loaded tractor-trailer travelling eastbound. Upon impact into the tractor-trailer, the three female passengers were ejected from the SUV. The SUV then spun into the northeast ditch where it came to rest.
The driver of the SUV and transport truck were not injured, however, all three passengers of the SUV did sustain injuries.
Stephanie Roloson, 19, of Dunnville, was taken to West Haldimand General Hospital where she was airlifted to ST. Micheals Hospital in Toronto with life threatening injuries. Brittany Boulliand, 20, and Rachel Bonnet, 21, both of Norfolk County, were transported to Hamilton General Hospital with serious injuries.
Haldimand County OPP along with a West Region OPP Technical Traffic Collision Investigator are continuing to investigate.
-------------------
As far as I know, Stephanie, who was airlifted to Toronto is eight months pregnant, both her and her baby are stable. Britney is also in Hamilton General Hospital with a broken back, she is awake (I think) and doing well, she is on the sixth floor, not in the ICU. Rachel is in the ICU, she seems to have gotten the worst of the crash.
Everyone was wearing seatbelts, except for Stephanie who couldn’t fit the seatbelt around her eight month pregnant stomach. The reason they were thrown from the vehicle is thought to be because the van rolled and the seatbelts don’t protect against being thrown out sideways.
Now to the details that everyone has been asking about Rachel...
Rachel is currently in a coma and has been since the accident, her eyes are somewhat responsive though. She did open her eyes twice when mom asked her two this afternoon. Also, she has survived the first twenty-four hours, which is amazing. Next goal: forty-eight and then a week.
Her back in broken in three places, and her breast bone is also broken, the doctors say these are minor injuries in comparison to her other injuries and they should heal themselves. The serious damage is in the damage to her brain and spinal column. There is evidence that she has gone without oxygen for a little bit, and also bleeding. The good news is that the pressure inside her brain is good. The damage to the spinal column caused her to have surgery this afternoon. The surgery was too removed her C5 vertebrae and fuse three other vertebrae together (something like that). Simply put, they took out the shards, put in titanium and parts of the bone back.
The surgery went well, although her spinal cord was crushed, the doctors are telling us that she may never walk again. Also, we are not yet sure about the use of her arms, she may regain full control of them, or have that also impaired. We just don’t know yet.
Other than that, Rachel needs her rest and visiting is only family right now, we are sure she is going to want to see everyone when she awake, I will try to keep this updated. She is not likely to be out of the hospital for a couple of months.
Thank you so much to everyone who has offered their support this far, please invite tell all that need to know.
