Midsummer Moon, by Laura Kinsale. Sounds like an alternate history about a woman inventer, and also possibly a romantic comedy? I hope so, as I really enjoy Kinsale's sense of humor even though it doesn't come up that often. Incidentally, the heroine and hero are Merlin Lambourne and Lord Ransom Falconer. Excellent!

I would classify Midsummer Moon as a secret history rather than an alternate history. It's charming.

I think you will like Reforming Lord Ragsdale and A Tangled Web.

Agreed about Midsummer Moon. Charming in places, but not Kinsale's most successful book.

I've started Snare three times, but haven't gotten past page 20 once. I've not had the courage to tell Kit this, however.

I thought the opening was a tad slow, too, but it picks up a lot.

I didn't recommend that one--my particular Stewart faves are Madam Will You Talk (which is basically a long car chase through southern france, with sidesteps into art and history) and Moonspinners--Greece, this time.

My absolute favorite historical romance is Daphne du Maurier's Frenchman's Creek.

Madam Will You Talk? was the first of Stewart's books I read, and it's still my very favorite. I watched a program on PBS about Provence recently and kept recognizing places from the book; now I want to go reread it.

I love the Greek ones too (though my favorite of those is My Brother Michael).

Oh, I have a soft spot for A Tangled Web that has to do with one character having a name similar to mine (one doesn't find my name in fiction all that often).

I'm not a fan of Kilmeny of the Orchard, but I mostly like A Tangled Web (that is, until I get to its very last sentence...grr). Have you read the Pat books by LMM?
