Sometimes I am glad of my ignorance of history, for it means that SF/F still seems wild and fantastical.

Then I realize that I am missing out on giant wall-climbing battle-lizards, and run to the library to acquire research books and knowledge.

I'd use mechanical. This was my instinct, and even if the characters don't speak English, OED backs me up: the oldest citation for mechanical meaning "powered by mechanisms" is 1567 (in the sense of "relating to craft of some sort" there are citations as early as 1485), while clockwork doesn't appear until 1679.
