That is such a wonderful trilogy. I loved all three, but you're right that it's not quite so dark as the others.

It's interesting how the level of darkness works with the topics:

1. Voices. Colonialism. Least dark.

2. Powers. Slavery. Medium dark.

3. Gifts. Feuding. Most dark.

Hmmmm.

I read them in the regular order, and ended up loving Powers best; I was really into Voices almost to the end, then it seemed like Memer got sidelined in her own story and everyone just went about accomplishing the resolution without her. Totally threw me off. But for some reason Le Guin's plots slip away from my conscious brain even as I read them, so I may have missed something important in that ending. . .

But yes, this one's definitely least dark. Gifts was so hopeless. . .

Yeah, she was more witness to the revolution than participant; it changed her more than she changed it. You don't usually read American YA sff novels involving large events in which the teenage hero isn't the one who personally makes the revolution succeed.
