School's out for summer

Yesterday was the last day of school with the kids. This ends my first full year teaching. At the end of the day, I felt like maybe I should be saying something sentimental to my class, but they were being so out of control and just completely ignoring me, so I didn't. I liked my class, but I didn't cry when they left. The school has a neat end of the year tradition where the PreK through fourth grade classes line the front sidewalk, and then the fifth graders walk down the sidewalk and give everyone high fives and we cheered for them.

So today and tomorrow are teacher work days. Lots of teachers are moving classrooms, me being one of them. This is making me grumpy. The teacher who is moving into my classroom has been bugging me since Monday to move her stuff in. I told her no so that I wouldn't have to move around all of her stuff for the last three days of school, and now she's mad at me. She's also been talking to at least two other teachers about how "horrible" and messy my classroom is. Frankly, compared to other classrooms, it's not. I do have a lot of papers lying around, but that's it. I wouldn't call piles of paper horrible. And it's not like I'm leaving them there for her to deal with! I'm going through every one of them and getting rid of trash. I would never leave a mess for someone, but she's acting like I am.

Not to mention that the room I'm moving into used to belong to the teacher who was arrested. She obviously hasn't been around the clean it out, so it really is a mess. The substitute that was in there for the last two weeks of school didn't even have the kids clean out their desks. I went in there yesterday and there was food all over the place. Gross. It just sucks to be working so hard to leave a decent room for someone else, all the while knowing that I have to go in to a room that wasn't left in the best condition.

Luckily, the custodians at our school have been awesome. I was totally expecting to have to move my own boxes, but they came in today and moved them all in about 15 minutes. Then they told me just to dump out the desks in my new room, and as long as it was in a pile on the floor all together, they'll pick up all the trash for me. I'm getting up early to make them brownies before I go in tomorrow.

I just really can't wait to be completely done with the moving and all of the end of the year wrapping up. This is definitely not my favorite part of the school year so far.
