Marx on alienation of labour, in the Economic and Philosophic Manuscripts of 1844:

"It's alien character emerges clearly in the fact that as soon as no physical or other compulsion exists, labour is shunned like the plague."

It's remarkably odd that at the moment I'm actually working on stuff that interests me a hell of a lot (I may not get the chance again to sit around all day thinking about and reading about ontological, ethical and political questions for ages), and yet I am still shunning it "like the plague". Bah!
