I'm in Belgium!
I arrived Friday morning, and I'm still pretty jet-lagged. But it's a beautiful country and of course it's great to be with Tim. On Saturday I met his immediate family, and on Sunday, I met his extended family at a baby shower for his sister's new baby. Everyone is very nice.
A note about Belgian baby showers: They happen after the baby is born, involve both men and women, and don't center around opening gifts. I think this is a great idea.
There was a cake at the baby shower, but for the vegans, there were pancakes with ice cream and chocolate sauce. The soy ice cream was probably the best I've ever had. It was so creamy. And the chocolate sauce was made by melting high quality Beligian chocolate and mixing in soy cream. It was amazing.
There was a little 3-year-old girl at the shower whose Dutch vocabulary was only slightly bigger than mine, so I could actually understand her when she spoke. I tried telling a 2-year-old where the cat was later, and I think I just ended up confusing him and had to resort to simply pointing.
Tim's cat Mathilda is very sweet. She sleeps about half as much as a normal cat because she likes to keep an eye on anyone who is home, so she sleeps mostly at night.
We bought 4 different kinds of vegan burgers at the store on Saturday, including a hazelnut one. There were many more kinds to choose from. Most vegan burgers in the US are just made out of soy.
I realize that this post is probably pretty boring, so I'll stop now. I'll update more later. I'll be here until Jan 3.
