January Reading Summary

Jan 30, 2011 21:08

(I know that it is still January 30th, and there is one more day left in the first month of 2011, but if I managed to finish anything else, I can just edit and add it later. )

I must say, I am very proud of how much reading I have been able to do in the past month. I was on fire for the first week, finishing a book a day, and have read a couple of the books on the BBC Big Read Top 100 already.
Bearing in mind my total last year was 25 books and my target for this year is 50, I've done exceedingly well.
I believe I have read 17 books in January, not including some of the academic texts that I only skimmed.

001. The Little Prince - Antoine de Saint-Exupéry  [Reviewed]
002. Chart Throb - Ben Elton [Reviewed]
003. Carmilla - Jospeh Sheridan Le Fanu [Reviewed] [Supplimentary text on Gothic Novel Module]
004. The Story of Tracy Beaker - Jaqueline Wilson [Reviewed] [BBC Big Read Top 100 #031]
005. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory - Roald Dahl [Reviewed] [BBC Big Read Top 100 #035]
006. Charlie and the Great Glass Elevator - Roald Dahl [Reviewed]
007. Skellig - David Almond [Reviewed]
008. Dancing with Mr Darcy
009. Shmoop Study Guide for Jane Eyre
010. Walt Disney: The Man Behind the Mouse
011. A Series of Unfortunate Events #06 - The Ersatz Elevator - Lemony Snicket
012. A Series of Unfortunate Events #07 - The Vile Village - Lemony Snicket
013. A Series of Unfortunate Events #08 - The Hostile Hospital - Lemony Snicket
014. A Series of Unfortunate Events #09 - The Carnivorous Carnival - Lemony Snicket
015. The Girl with the Pearl Earring - Tracy Chevalier [Will Review]
016 - The Castle of Otranto - Horace Walpole [Will Review] [Main text on Gothic Novel Module]
017 - Niubi! The Real Chinese You Were Never Taught in School - Eveline Chao and Chris Murphy*

As you can see, 2 of the books I read were from the Big Read Top 100, but I also managed to read some highly rated children's fiction there and some highly rated fiction, like The Girl with the Pearl Earring, which I am sure is on the list of '1001 books to read before you die', as is The Little Prince.

I'm currently in the middle of reading A Series of Unfortunate Events #10 - The Slippery Slope, The Monk by Matthew Lewis (as required for my Gothic Novel module in 2 weeks time), Everything is Going to Kill Everybody: The Terrifyingly Real Ways the World Wants You Dead, by Robert Brockway. I also started to read Animal Farm and My Name is Mina, but I think I may be stretching my reading ability having so many going on at once.

So. Shall I set a target for February? How about I finish off the Series of Unfortunate Events and the Gothic novels for my literature module in Feb, and get the library books out of the way? Sound do-able, right?
Which means I must finish reading:
- A Series of Unfortunate Events #10 - The Slippery Slope
- A Series of Unfortunate Events #11 - The Grim Grotto
- A Series of Unfortunate Events #12 - The Penultimate Peril
- A Series of Unfortunate Events #13 - The End
- The Monk - By Matthew Lewis
- The Mysteries of Udolpho - By Anne Radcliffe
- Frankenstein (both 1818 edition and the more common 1830 version) by Mary Shelley
- Animal Farm - By George Orwell
- My Name is Mina by David Almond
- The King of Pirates by Daniel Defoe

Which adds up to 11 books. Seems fair enough in a month with only 28 days right? Except The Monk and Udolpho are lengthy, and reading 2 versions of Frankenstein could prove irritating. Oh well. I'll do my best!

ETA: I totally forgot this book. Realised I'd finished reading it and forgotten to mention it on here after flicking through my Kindle library. Ooops. Not that I remember any of the words. Gave me a good laugh though :P Have edited rest of entry to reflect the change to my book total :P
