Rockfic rec: "Green" by ScrewTheDaisies

Midwestern fanboy gets invited to join a world-famous rock band. Sounds like the premise for a Larry Stu on fanfiction.net. But it really happened for a young bassist named Jason Newsted who was hired by Metallica after the band's original bassist died.

“Green” is just plain good storytelling. It’s about the new guy struggling to gain the acceptance and respect of his peers. It's about the dream job going south. You don’t have to know or like Metallica to relate.

The author writes convincingly about the grueling day-to-day routine of a touring rock band, and incorporates incidents reported in the media. Her characterizations for the band members mesh with what’s publicly known. Her writing is detailed, vivid and poignant. It’s easy to empathize with her Jason. You feel his excitement, his disillusionment and his loneliness. I thought the most moving scene was when Jason goes home for the holidays and makes up a sanitized version of his life for his parents.

“Green” is novel-length (about 60,000 words) and archived in an adults-only community called Rockfic. Here you’ll find over 1,700 RPF and RPS stories on a wide variety of bands, from Led Zeppelin to Nirvana to My Chemical Romance. You get access to the fic archive plus the message boards with band news, tour info, photos, writing help, etc.
