Rape Crisis Bigots on Call
WHAT. THE. FUCK.
A friend recently linked to this appalling, bigoted attack on transpesons FROM THE POV OF A RAPE CRISIS CENTER IN VANCOUVER, BC.
I'm not going to go through every fallacy, stereotype, mistake, and BLATANT FUCKING LIE in the article - I'm pretty sure that anyone bothering to read this LJ can spot 'em for hirself - but I am going to say that as someone who worked at a rape crisis center for years, I am furious and ashamed at the ignorance and bigotry that Vancouver Rape Resources was so enthusiastically embracing at the time of this article*, and columnist Michele Landsberg - who's apparently a pretty reasonable human most of the time - is so viciously defending.
Arguing that it's a product of the time - seven years ago - is bullshit. At that point, rape crisis centers - including the one where I worked - standardly served transgendered and genderqueer (AND MALE, Landsberg, you privilege-dripping scum) clients and trained volunteers to respond sensitively and appropriately to issues specific to those clients. IT WAS A STANDARD AND ESTABLISHED PART OF OUR SERVICES AND TRAINING AND HAD BEEN FOR A LONG TIME.
The transphobia that continues to rear its head in the feminist and queer women's communities is disgusting and intolerable, but this is beyond the pale.
*Apparently, the VRR has not changed its policies since the article and remains virulently antitrans.
