Summary: Christmas time in the Tardis
AN: Unbeated.
--------------------------
Time could get so mixed up here in the Tardis. Yet Tegan somehow instinctively knew Christmas was around the corner. She'd always loved Christmas. She loved decorating the whole flat. She and her Aunt Vanessa would spend the whole day after Thanksgiving getting the tree. Then the next day they'd decorate it. She wondered if the Doctor would be willing to let her have one on board.
The question was how to go about it. Nyssa wouldn't be any help. Tegan doubted they had Christmas on Traken. No, this was going to take a unique approach, but she supposed asking wouldn't hurt. She went into the console room to find the Doctor using the sonic screwdriver on the controls. Part of her hoped they were the directional ones. It would be nice to be home for Christmas, even with Aunt Vanessa gone.
"Doctor?"
"What is it Tegan?" The Doctor asked already exasperated.
"Sorry to bother you, but I was thinking, it's almost Christmas back home...."
"And?"
"I was just wondering.... do they have Christmas on Gallifrey?"
The Doctor turned and looked at her. From the look on his face she could tell she'd surprised him. He walked around her for a second. It was a bit uncomfortable. Once he was facing her again he had a smile on his face.
"Well, no we don't have Christmas per se Tegan, but we do have our own rituals. Why do you ask?"
"Just curious is all. So what exactly do these rituals entail."
"You wouldn't understand them."
"Try me."
"Another time perhaps. Right now I've got to see about getting these directionals fixed."
Well that had gone about as well as she'd expected. Turning on her heel she left. She tried to not be angry. It's not like she'd come out and asked him if she could decorate the Tardis. But she was sure he'd say no. Yes the unique approach was going to have to do.
On the First Day of Christmas.....
The Doctor walked back into the console room to find a wrapped box sitting there. Opening it he found what he assumed was a tree ornament which appeared to be a bird sitting on a tree. Shaking his head, not really understaning he set the box on the floor and continued his work
On the Second Day of Christmas....
The Doctor walked into the kitchen to find yet another box. Opening it he found his sonic screwdriver. Picking it up he pressed the button and found it worked. Yet he was sure it had been broken on their most recent excursion. He set it aside and went to find Nyssa.
He found her sitting in the conservatory reading.
"Nyssa."
"Yes Doctor?"
"Did you fix my Sonic Screwdriver?"
"No, why do you ask?"
"It's nothing. I'm sure it's just the Tardis dropping a hint."
On the Third Day of Christmas....
The Doctor found each of the corridors had colored lights throughout them. This was getting ridiculous. What was the Tardis doing? However, when he asked the question out loud he got no response. That had to mean it was one of his companions. Nyssa wouldn't do this without asking. That only left Tegan.
He found Tegan sitting in the library looking at books on Galifreian rituals. He walked over and sat down across from her. She didn't look up and he noticed she was taking notes.
"Tegan?"
"Yes?"
"Might I have a word?"
"Of course."
"I've noticed a number of strange things happening recently on the Tardis. She swears it isn't her. And Nyssa seems to be as baffled by all this as I am. You wouldn't know anything about them would you?"
"Not a clue. Sorry Doctor."
"So what have you got there?"
"Just a book."
"Tegan, what are you up to?"
"Doctor, why is it you think I'm up to something?" Tegan asked glaring at him. She had to remember to keep up her normal behavior, she still had nine days to go.
He didn't say anything just let out a sigh and walked off.
Tegan put her pen down and let out a sigh of her own. Her plan wasn't going to work. He'd only get angry with her. As much as she wanted to make it through the whole 12 days to Christmas she wasn't sure she'd survive. Deciding to just gather up the courage she went to find him. He was in his room with the door slightly ajar. Knocking she entered.
"Doctor?"
"Tegan."
"Um, I wasn't completely honest with you in the library."
"Really? I never would have guessed."
"Look it's almost Christmas at home."
"So you said before."
"You aren't going to make this easy for me are you?"
"Tegan I'm not a mind reader. Just come out and ask whatever it is you're trying to ask." Tegan smirked and raised an eyebrow. Not a mind reader eh, Your ship just gets into my head.
"I looked through all the books I could find, and I didn't find a single ritual that was anything like Christmas. So have you ever celebrated Christmas before?"
"Once or twice. Why?"
"Hells teeth Doctor, do you have to make this so difficult?"
Before he could respond Tegan stormed off. The Doctor smiled to himself and started humming the 12 days of Christmas. To be honest he couldn't wait to see what she had up her sleeve.
On the Fourth Day of Christmas.....
The next day the Doctor found the lights were gone. It upset him more than he thought it would. He wanted to go see Tegan, but after yesterday he felt she needed time to cool off. Nyssa was working in the console room when he entered.
"Doctor, what are you and Tegan fighting about now?"
"I wasn't aware we were fighting."
"Doctor,"
"Nyssa if Tegan wants something all she has to do is ask."
To his relief Nyssa decided to let the matter drop. But she had given him something to think about. Perhaps it was time to turn the tables.
On the Fifth Day of Christmas.......
The following morning Tegan woke to find a small box sitting on her nightstand. Opening it she found five pairs of earings inside. Seeing the note she picked it up and read it:
On the Fifth Day of Christmas my true love gave to me... five golden rings.
Shaking her head she got up and went about her day. Just before bed she found the Doctor in her room. He was leaning on her dresser holding the box.
"Doctor, what can I do for you?"
"Lovely earings."
"Yes."
"Are they new?"
"Just found them this morning."
The Doctor got up and crossed the room in two strides. Before she knew it, he was standing in front of her. He leaned in and Tegan suddenly felt goosebumps forming. She wasn't scared, it was more an excited feeling. She had to admit, since he regenerated she found herself daydreaming about kissing the Doctor.
"Let's not beat around the bush Tegan. What do you want?"
You to kiss me senseless. Then take me to bed...... Tegan shook her head. She smiled at the Doctor and tried to turn away. Heck she tried to walk away. Just so happened he was blocking her path.
"Personal space Doctor; ever heard of the concept?"
She'd hoped it would get him to back up a bit. Instead he just leaned in.
"What. Do. You. Want. Tegan?"
"Nothing Doctor."
"Tegan, I won't ask again."
"Doctor, honestly I don't want anything."
"If you change your mind, you know where to find me."
"Of course Doctor."
Once he'd gone she realized there was no way she was going to make it another six days. Not if he was doing things like he just had.
On the Sixth Day of Christmas
The Doctor found a tree where the coat rack should be. He just smiled and, when Nyssa asked him what was going on he feigned innocence. Once she'd left the room he took the ornament he'd found when Tegan started this whole thing, out hiding and placed it on one of the branches.
On the Seventh Day of Christmas......
Well at least Tegan had put lights on the tree, but with the exception of the ornament he had put on it, it was seriously lacking. Going into the wardrobe he searched through the boxes until he found the Santa hat Susan had bought all those years ago. If Tegan wasn't going to decorate the tree he'd just have to chip in and do it for her.
On the Eighth Day of Christmas.....
Tegan found the tree fully decorated. She smiled to herself. Her plan was working. The Doctor watched Tegan from just inside the doorway. The smile that spread on her face lit up the room more than the christmas tree did. He silently slipped into the room and stood behind her bouncing on his heels. He wasn't going to bother her. At least that's what he told himself.
"Do you like it?" He whispered into her ear.
"Cripes Doctor you scared me." She said jumping slightly.
"Sorry." He said sheepishly. He noticed her start to giggle.
"I never thought I'd see the day you were wearing a Santa hat."
"Oh. I still have that on don't I?"
She nodded. "And to answer your question, Doctor, it's wonderful. Why?"
"Because I felt like it And I get the sense it has to do with what you've been trying to ask me."
Tegan was silent. She turned away from him.
"You'll think it's silly."
"No I won't, Tegan. Silly is me in this hat."
She couldn't help but chuckle at that. "It's does clash a bit."
He reached up to take it off and she stopped him. Then she kissed his cheek. "Thank you, Doctor."
"You're very welcome Tegan."
On the Ninth Day of Christmas
Tegan was out of ideas. There was only one more thing she could do and that she wanted to do on the last day. When she passed the Doctor in the kitchen she noticed him humming christmas carols to himself as he left. Maybe she should ask. Maybe he wouldn't say no after all.
After grabbing a bite to eat, she found him in one of the corridors hanging tinsel. She smiled up at him. "Pass me that strand would you, Tegan?"
She did as he asked. And just stood there watching him. She couldn't believe this. He was... being so normal. Oh she'd come to terms with his being an alien a while ago. But this just caught her off guard. And he was still
wearing the Santa hat.
"Are you feeling all right Doctor?"
"Fine Tegan. Why do you ask?"
"You're humming."
"Nothing wrong with that." The Doctor said coming down from the ladder.
"Where to now?"
"Kitchen. I'm in the mood for some hot cocca."
On the Tenth Day of Christmas
Tegan had racked her brain the whole day for soemthing to do today. The Doctor had taken care of two of the days, and she supposed it was her turn now. However, she honestly didn't have an idea of what to do. She was deep in thought in the observatory when she heard Nyssa calling her.
"Huh? Oh sorry Nyssa didn't hear you come in. What's up?"
"The Doctor's acting rather strange."
"He always acts a little strange Nyssa. What's got you so worried?"
"He was..... leaping through the corridor"
Tegan couldn't help it she burst out laughing. Oh he was so awful to her. He knew exactly what she wanted to ask him. She tried to calm herself down but couldn't. "Ten lords a leaping." She laughed out.
"Tegan what's so funny?"
"It's an old Earth christmas carol. Basically someone gets 12 gifts for Christmas. I was using it to convince the Doctor to let me put up some decoration around the Tardis. On the tenth day it's ten lords a leaping. He knew you'd come tell me cause you'd be worried."
"This Christmas is a big deal isn't it?"
"Not to everyone, but it is to me. I only wish I could go shopping."
"Your wish is my command Tegan."
"Doctor! I didn't hear you come in." Nyssa said in a scolding tone.
"Well, Nyssa I didn't want to interupt. Would you go make sure the directionals are still set?"
"Of course Doctor."
Tegan could feel him moving closer. She found herself frozen in her spot. As much fun as she was having bringing Christmas cheer to the Tardis she had to admit, these moments with the Doctor were more thrilling and exciting than decorating for Christmas had ever been.
"Are you sure you don't want to ask me anything, Tegan?"
"I'd say you've figured it out all on your own, Doctor. And what you didn't figure out you overheard."
"Don't be cross, Tegan."
"I'm not." She turned to face him and found him smiling at her. It was the smile she hated, not really but he didn't need to know that.
"So tell me Tegan, what would you like for Christmas?"
There were so many ways she could answer that question. She was sure he expected her to say that she wanted to go to Heathrow. But after the past few days, she suddenly didn't want to leave so quickly.
"To go to a planet where we're not running for our lives. A nice little planet where we can have a iittle vacation." And is it so wrong that I want Nyssa to decide to stay on the Tardis. It could be her Christmas present to me.
That stopped the Doctor. He stood with his mouth hanging open. Tegan took this as her cue to leave. She headed towards the console room. He was actually giving her a shopping trip. What was better was that it appeared to be Earth.
On the Eleventh Day of Christmas
The Doctor noticed a bit of change in Tegan after the previous day's shopping excursion. He also noticed she appeared to be hiding something. He smiled to himself. He felt the Tardis hum around him.
"Don't you dare. She'd never forgive me if I wasn't genuinely surprised."
"Doctor?"
"Oh, hello Tegan. I didn't hear you come in."
"So I noticed. Do you have a moment or would you and the Tardis prefer to be alone."
"Of course not Tegan. What can I do for you?"
"I just wanted to thank you. You could have insisted I take everything down, but you didn't. I really appreciate it."
"So what do you have planned for today?"
"Nothing terribly exciting unless a ship passes us in the vortex."
"What did you do?" The Doctor said with a chuckle in his voice.
"I put a wreath on the Tardis doors. I didn't think you'd mind. I did it late last night before we dematerialized.
"I don't mind at all. Though I must admit I can't wait to see what you do on the final day."
Tegan didn't say anything just got a sly grin on her face and left the room. She had a lot of work to do for tomorrow. She was no longer worried the Doctor wouldn't approve of anything she did. She also had a feeling the Tardis would work with her if need be.
On the Twelfth Day of Christmas.......
The Doctor came into the console room to find himself standing under mistletoe. Nyssa was no where to be found on the Tardis. He'd checked all her usual haunts and this was the last one. Before he could move any further inside he felt a tap on his shoulder.
"Doctor, you know there's an old Earth custom when someone is under the mistletoe."
"Oh really Tegan and what is that?" He asked feigning innocence.
Tegan got up on her toes and took his face in her hands then she kissed him. She was just going to make it a little peck on the lips, but the Doctor wrapped his arms around her and deepened it. When they finally came up for air Tegan had to remain in the Doctor's arms until she could steady herself.
"Cripes Doc warn a girl next time."
"Merry Christmas Tegan." The Doctor said laughing.
"Merry Christmas. Oh wait, there's your present."
"You mean there's more?"
"It's not anything fancy, I saw it in the shop yesterday and couldn't pass it up. Stay right there."
Moments later she returned with a large box. The Doctor marvelled at the ornate wrapping. He couldn't imagine where she'd found the time to do this. He gingerly opened it and was amazed to find a new cricket bat. As well as pads and a new ball.
"Tegan, you didn't have to do that. I had thought my new sonic screwdriver was your gift. How did you manage that anyway?"
"The Tardis did it for me. Can't have you galavanting around the universe all 'I'm the Doctor and I can fix it with a kettle and some string. So I asked her to see what she could do."
"Ah, I should have guessed. But I didn't get you anything."
"Oh really. What about the earrings. I asked Nyssa she swore they weren't from her. And I did confess about the sonic screwdriver. I'd say it's your turn."
"Well, you needed something to get you to realize I didn't mind. And you really could have just asked me you know." Tegan suddenly realized the Doctor was steering her back under the mistletoe.
Before she could shoot back with some retort he captured her mouth with his own. This kiss was just as intense as the last. Neither of them realized Nyssa had come into the room and gone. In fact they didn't come up for air until they heard the materialization sound.
"Doctor where are we?"
"Did you not say you wanted a vacation of sorts. I had Nyssa find us the perfect planet. She must have found something."
"Where is she by the way?"
'I was about to ask you the same thing when you so rudely interupted me with that kiss."
"Me. You kissed me."
"You did start it with the mistletoe and the tradition."
"Doctor. Please don't ruin this by arguing with me."
He leaned down and kissed her softly once more. Part of Tegan didn't want to take the mistletoe down. She smiled up at him then took his hand to pull him towards the door. "Come on I want to see where we are."
They exited the Tardis to find it snowing. Tegan looked up at the Doctor. He noticed her eyes seemed to be sparkling and there was that smile again; the one brighter than the tree. In that moment he could help but kiss her.
"What was that for? There's no mistletoe."
"Just to say Merry Christmas Tegan." He said flicking a snowflake gently from her nose.
"Merry Christmas Doctor." She said hugging him. She then turned in his embrace to watch the snow fall.
