so the store is closed and i'm cleaning up and shelving books and i'm going through the manga section and BAM! ghost-o7 had been licensed!! when?!
i know a lot of people were angry at tokyopop about the process for american mangaka and how they published the works, the money they received and the credit given... but if you look at how much stuff they've licensed from japan... they're incredible! (and no offense to those american mangaka, if you look at the sales, japan beats america by a lot... so think about how much more they will invest in that department in the company... and please think about it in an objective and business development point of view.)
what i love about tokyopop is that they take all different types of genres, popular and not so popular and put them into print for the american public. what's even better is that they're translations make so much more sense then what viz prints out. please, everyone knows the horrors of viz. i mean dude, tokyopop had the guts to do loveless and silver diamond. and they have a yaoi branch BLU! you have to give credit to them for recognizing that BL is on the rise. much much much more slow than what is selling in japan, but people are buying. and tokyopop even have novels out! not just a movie novelization (i.e. naruto's second movie). but before it became a manga/anime it was a novel.
viz can't do anything close to BL, because (i think) they're afraid of the association. if you look at the works viz has done, they either come out directly of shounen jump or shoujo beat. they really don't have a variety. and it sucks because a lot of people like the works from jump or beat, but the translations are horrible! it doesn't help viz that i took great offense because nothing is correct in naruto. dude, "Black Ops"? this isn't the american military. please don't change things around because the kids won't understand. make footnotes and explain what they mean in the back... like what tokyopop does.
and yes, i'll stop ranting about the uselessness of that is viz.
