PRE RACE
we left the hotel a bit before 6. it was already warm & humid.
bjorg & i picked up our race bib (#)
i found justin b. - the race director - to say thanks with a bumper sticker.
RACE
a bit before 7am we headed to the start.
a police siren would signal the start
start area
and they are off
i stayed near the end and talked w/ scott - a marathon maniac with an injured achilles. we talked until about mile 7 or 8. (thanks for the company and heal well).
cute canine.
he(?) was running alongside a marathoner ahead of us. then he would get distracted by something on the side of the road. as soon as he saw us catching up "nope - i am leader" and off he went again. around this photo he was either too hot or it was as faar as he would stray from home.
after scott slowed a bit i joined john. this was his first marathon. i had met he & his wife tanya @ the start line (please correct me if i have either name mistaken). they work with an organization called medals 4 mettle .
Medals4Mettle (M4M) is a non-profit organization that facilitates the gifting of marathon, half marathon, and triathlon finishers’ medals. Runners from around the world give their hard earned medals to Medals4Mettle. Our worldwide network of physicians and volunteers then awards these medals attached to a Medals4Mettle ribbon to children and adults fighting debilitating illnesses who might not be able to run a race, but are in a race of their own just to continue to live their life. It is in honor of this mettle and courage in bravely facing these challenges that they are awarded a medal.
yay - my medals will have a purpose @ the end of the project.
around mile 10 i left john & headed off to run my 5 / walk 1. i was doing well, even thought i might catch my friend.
then it got hot. extra hot. hot enough that i unzipped my shirt, eventually taking it off.
i leap frogged with a few people for short bits of time. then slowly i was passing people.
lots of open road
i stopped @ every aid station to drink water, fill up 2 of my water bottles, and dump water on me.
by mile 14 i was running 3 walking 1 min. somewhere between 18 and 20 i start 2/1.
the last mile i was running 1 and walking 1. it was hot and i was ready to be off the road.
next time i think it might be hot, my neck cooler is coming along. in addition, i'll be running a decent pace from the start to avoid as much heat as possible.
thanks bjorg for the photo
nice ice cold towel there
