Gene Luen Yang's appeal for a Last Airbender boycott

May 26, 2010 16:15

Hi there, everyone. This has been all over my blogroll today, and I thought it deserved a mention here:

Cartoonist Gene Luen Yang, creator of American Born Chinese (and co-creator, along with Derek Kirk Kim, of The Eternal Smile) has posted a brief, heartfelt comic in his blog laying out the issue of the Last Airbender whitewashing, and asking people to join him in boycotting the film.

The story has been picked up by a number of prominent comics news blogs (such as The Beat and ComicsAlliance). The reporting's pretty good, and so is some of the response, but there are also some of the usual problematic comments. (I'm particularly disturbed by some of the attacks on Yang at his own site - it's such a personal take on the issue, and it really rankles me to see him accused of hypocrisy and racism against the actors.) You may want to leave a supportive note.
