Cracked.com's take:

Got this from someone who re-posted on IMDB; so I will do so here, as well.

From a July 9, 2008 article at cracked.com, by Jeff Kelly, entitled "7 Movies Based on a True Story (That Are Complete Bullshit)" Old news, but a funny read.

I did want to see this movie...ironically, I wanted to see it because I saw an Asian guy in the movie poster. I love Jim Sturgess and all, but the "background character" sold me because it's so rare to see a not so stereotypical Asian in the media.

Same here! The only reason that I was initially interested in this movie (although I ended up never seeing it) was because of Aaron Yoo (partly because he was Asian and partly because I thought he was cute *blushes*) and Liza Lapira. Then, I found out later about how the movie had essentially been whitewashed and I thought that maybe I should be glad that I didn't go to see it after all.

Aaron Yoo is totally adorable. You have nothing to hide from me. I unabashedly watch Super Junior MVs just because I think they're all devastatingly gorgeous young Asian men who can serenade me any day.

I desperately want more Asian guys in American media. It's a little sad that I have to go overseas to get some variety when we're a cultural melting pot.

I remember at the 2600 meetings I got to gloat that not only did they white wash the cast but that it also looked like a boring hacker movie. It would have been better as a comedy like the movie Hackers.

I never did see a photo comparason though. And now that I see it, holy crap! John Cho = Jeff Ma! XD

The real Jeff Ma (Ben Campbell in the movie) said, "For me it wasn't a big deal, because for about three years people had been asking me who I wanted to play me in a movie and I never was saying like 'John Cho' or 'Chow Yun-Fat' or 'Jackie Chan...' I think people like to look at it at face value like that, the reality is if you ask anyone who they wanted to play you, it wouldn't necessarily be 'Who's the most ethnically tied to me?'" Instead, Jeff believes that most people would want someone who is 'cool' to play them, or rather a talented actor who personifies their personality the best.

Um...yeah, but no, Jeff. Granted, I can only speak for myself, but, while I wouldn't necessarily want a Korean actress to play me, you bet I'd want someone who is at least of East Asian descent. I think that Sandra Bullock is cool and awesome and I like to believe that her kick-assedness embodies my own personality well (HAHAHAHA...not really), but I wouldn't want her to play me in a movie. The thing is, if someone were to really ask us a question ( ... )
