end of the year fic review | 2011

My fiction written and posted in 2010 = 253418 words = 100 fics

Looking back, did you write more fic than you thought you would this year, less, or about what you'd predicted?
Definitely more. I was on writing hiatus at the beginning of the year, which failed, mostly, so to end up with 240k of published fic (not to mention the like 80k fic I'm working on right now that isn't included in that) is kind of crazy.

What's your favourite story of the year? Not the most popular, but the one that makes you happiest?
I had to give this some thought, because I really liked my atlantisbigbang fic, the one with jonas/john/eliot, but one I really liked was actually one that flew under the radar for the most part and it's We're Chasing All Those Stars, a John/Ronon fic I wrote near the beginning of the year.

Did you take any writing risks this year? What did you learn from them?
I wrote real honest to god threesome fic, as well as my first rps fic, and both of those were pretty risky to me. The first because it's threesome fic and so many people expect that to be flat out porn, and I think I ended up averaging about 1 sex scene per 20k of fic. And rps is a risk because it's rps.

Do you have any fanfic or profic goals for the New Year?
I said this last year and then it didn't happen because things just kept getting in the way, but I do want to finish the Delicate series, which I'm chipping at super slowly. I also want to finish my Batman Begins fic, because I feel bad that it's just been hanging out in limbo for so long.

My Best Story of the Year
You know, I'm not sure. I think my writing has changed a lot in one year, and I've started writing in a bunch of new fandoms. One I really enjoyed, though, was The Correlation of Salvation and Love in the Supernatural fandom, also from that fandom I really like i needed room to breathe//running from me.

From SGA it would probably have to be Every Lament (Is a Love Song) just because of how much death I've faced this year.

Story Most Under appreciated by the Universe in My Opinion
Probably any of my Supernatural stuff, mostly because I'm too lazy to post it to a comm and most of the people who track/follow me are here for Stargate stuff. Someday I'll be unlazy.

Most Fun Story
Definitely the words unspoken inside. This isn't a fun fic, per se, but I had the most fun writing it. It basically wrote itself in less than a week.

Most Sexy Story
I'm going to go with It's All Disappearing (And It All Falls Apart). That fic with the needles that I did. Yeah, that one.

Hardest Story to Write
There are fics where sometimes I make myself cry just writing them. I don't know if that's normal or not, but it happens. That said, I think the hardest fics to write are the ones that have the most of yourself in them. A lot of people think I'm like Connor, and while we do share a love of raspberries and rugby, there isn't really a lot of myself in him.

So the hardest story to write is actually tied between two: like waves upon a shore (Hawaii 5-0) and remember when (it was together) (SGA).

I don't think it's any kind of lie that I've been massively depressed this year, sort of lost and floating around, and I can identify a bit with Danny and John in these fics. Maybe someday I'll get a happier ending, too.

Biggest Surprise
The thing about making these memes is that I have a short memory. I've published 99 fics this year and can barely remember what I wrote at the beginning of the year. In terms of something such as biggest surprise, it's going to end up being something that's closer in time to the present.

That said, I'm surprised anyone read The Difference Between Absolution and Redemption (Has Always Been Where You End Up) because it's out there and it's a weird pairing and its a mix of fandoms that I've never run across personally.

I'm also surprised at the reception to my first rps story, which was posted under a sock account, because I know some people here aren't down with that sort of thing, and that's cool. But people read my fic and liked it.

There's always that fear when you enter a new fandom that you've fucked something up. That you wrote a character in a way that either everyone else does or that no one else does and is such a far cry from canon you should be shot. I entered several new fandoms this year, and some of that fear still hasn't left me in some of them (Supernatural and Leverage, I'm looking at you).

Honestly, it's a surprise anytime someone reads something I wrote. I'm just this girl, you know? This person who sits behind a computer 16 hours a day trying to find a job and a place in the world and when I get messages and comments about how much people like my fic or what it means to them or how it's touched them...well, honestly sometimes I don't know what to do with that. It's just kind of this amazing feeling to know that someone out there somewhere has read something I wrote while high on ICEEs and Cheetos, listening to the same song on repeat a million times (well, okay, more like 419 times, but still, the hyperbole exists for a reason).

So what about you guys? Is it vain to ask which of my fics you've enjoyed the most? Or which stands out the most? Or just one you were like WHY HAVENT YOU WRITTEN MORE OF THIS I DEMAND IT NOW (that isn't Delicate)? I'm just curious on a writing level, because it never ends up being what I think it will, and never for what I think it will.
