Sam had never believed in love at first sight before. Before this moment, he wasn’t really sure he even believed in love. He’s seen too much in the world, he knows too much to think that maybe there’s a light at the end of the tunnel to offset all of the bad in the world.

Then he sees her. She’s beautiful and his heart skips a beat just looking at her.

Sam doesn’t know her name, but he wants to. He wants to know everything about her. He wants to know her favorite colors and her favorite bands. He wants to know what makes her laugh and what makes her cry.

Hours later, he knows her name is Amy and that she likes the Goo Goo Dolls. He knows that she’s lonely and different and Sam knows a little bit about that himself.

“Come with me,” she says. “We can be freaks together.”

And Sam wants to. He’s tired of moving all of the time, he’s tired of living in his dad’s and brother’s back pockets. Sam’s not the same as them as he knows it, they know it, but they all pretend he is anyway. Sam’s tired of pretending. He’s tired of lying to his new friends, tired of living out of the Impala and dingy motel rooms.

He barely knows Amy but he can see a future with her. A small white house with a vibrantly green yard. He sees red wagons and children’s toys.

Amy’s not human, but Sam’s seen enough of the world to know that being human doesn’t mean a thing. It just means ignorance and disbelief and living life without fear of what goes bump in the night.

She holds out her hand and it’s warm when Sam takes it. He barely knows her, but she makes his palms sweat and his mouth dry.

His dad and Dean are coming, Sam’s sure of that. It’s now or never and Sam’s had enough of this life to know that never is a really long time.

This is crazy, it’s insane, it’s the most reckless thing Sam’s ever done.

“Yes,” he says. “But we gotta hurry.”

She smiles at him and Sam licks his lips, tasting her strawberry lip gloss. His heart is pounding and he can’t believe he’s doing it, but it feels right. All of Sam’s life he’s felt wrong. He’s never belonged, he’s never fit in, but here, with Amy, Sam fits.

It’s that moment when you meet someone and you just know. Sam knows. He can feel it down deep. He fell head over heels for Amy in less time that it takes to cook a turkey. And it’s the best thing that’s ever happened to him.

He helps her pack and they swing by the motel Sam was staying at on the way out of town. They’re in Amy’s minivan and it already feels like home. A black Impala passes them, going the other way, and Sam doesn’t look to see who it is.

The sun’s almost up when they cross state lines. Amy turns to him, her smile beautiful and wide. “We’re free, Sam.”

And as they link fingers, Sam thinks, yeah, we are.

Sam’s never believed in love at first sight, until he saw Amy.
