So, I didn't get very far with my first draft. I mean, I wrote up the first one, and then I kept wanting to add more stuff and I basically lost the flow of the paper. The style I seem to have gravitated towards is "religious tract", and I'm not sure I'm comfortable with that.

Anyways, I'm going to save it and throw everything out. It's too reactionary right now. However, I rather liked the first bits I wrote, so I'm going to share that:

"As yourself"

Strong ties.

"The alien living with you must be treated as one of your native-born. Love him as yourself, for you were aliens in Egypt. I am the LORD your God."

The essence of humanity is in our ability to relate. To relate, which is to tell a story that draws a connection between one thing and another. To form relationships, through narrative, between the past and the present, the present and the future, the past and the future. And with this network, we draw meaning.

Relationships are stories: stories of two lives intertwined for some period, the threads weaving in and out, changing the shape and hue of the tapestry they are individually weaving bit by bit. And these lives might be human beings; indeed, the profoundest of stories are those about ourselves and some... Other.
