The Coat Trick

Hrm.

This morning, I have elected to reflect upon The Coat Trick. A small thing. I am mostly wondering whether or not Lucy learned it on her own. It occurs to me that it's actually a remarkable leap of understanding in how coats work, for a three-year-old.

The trick is pretty straightforward, from my perspective. You put the coat on the ground, grab it by the holes inside, and throw it over your head to put it on. Pretty amusing, at face value, but unless someone was demonstrating that, not something I'd expect to occur to anyone.

The first time I saw it, I wasn't all that ready so when I tried to put her coat on, she insisted on doing her trick. So I let her, and in the back of my mind was going, "Whoo. Doing something without my help. Am I going to have to fix a tangle here? What's going on?" The trick was performed and I was faintly amused and she seemed terribly proud of showing it off.

I'd say that's deserved. I wonder where she learned it, or if she came up with it on her own. I can easily imagine an adult being playful and doing something similar enough to give her the idea, though I can't imagine that she asked for help in figuring it out (an adult would not have put it down on the ground first, heh). It might have come from some other kid and plagiarism be damned; that's just the same question once removed, though.

She's gotten less proud of it, and I've seen her do it a few times now, so I'm inclined to believe this suggests she'd come up with it only recently. Ravenna never seemed as proud of achieving it, which either suggests a difference in personality... or another mark that it's an original trick. I'm going with the latter; my read of Ravenna is that she'd be as proud if she'd come up with it on her own. That seems her style.

I'm curious to see where this little quirk goes. Do they just keep doing it semi-frequently, but start considering it to be normal? I don't see that happening; they know it's a cute kid thing, I read, and I imagine they'd go and mimic adults instead. Do they stop doing it altogether? I sorta hope not.

This is something I think I'll get to see play itself out. Kinda fun to watch.

This entry was brought to you today by the letter C. Om nom nom nom.
