[ CHARACTER INFORMATION ]
Name: Kida Masaomi
Age: 16
Gender: Male
Fandom: Durarara!!
Timeline: Post Ep 19
History: ONCE UPON A TIME Kida grew up an ordinary boy in a small town with his BFF where he was subtly a local hero to the weak and underprivileged and generally excitable and friendly, then one day his parents took him away to Tokyo and in middle school he did his PROTECTING THE WEAK gig and somehow ended up with a gang and making a multitude of bad life choices. Such as. Having a gang. But he enjoyed his reasonably dangerous middleschool gang leader career while secretly hoping someone would like him for who he was and not as the shogun of the Yellow Turbans. Then he met a girl who was pretty crazy and obsessed with a clearly unsafe older man, but fell for her anyway and gradually accepted her advice to trust clearly unsafe older man, which ultimately resulted in the girl getting her legs tortuously broken and left in permanent disrepair and Kida chickening out of saving her because HOLY SHIT THIS IS NOT HIS ONLY SLIGHTLY DANGEROUS MIDDLESCHOOL GANG VIOLENCE FUNTIMES and SO Kida visited his girl at the hospital while she was still in a coma and highly unsafe older man drilled it into his skull that he would feel guilty and be trapped by his past forever.
And after that Kida left gang life, crippled girlfriends, and clearly unsafe older men as far far far behind him as he could. He invited his former BFF from his INNOCENT YEARS to Tokyo and went about being dead set on enjoying a totally normal and carefree life.
Until his BFF's girlfriend somehow got mixed up in a serial slashing escapade and his old gang started growing big again and asking him to come help them in the gang war and Kida returned. Not because of the gang war but because SERIOUSLY. SERIAL SLASHING HIS FRIEND IS NOT DOWN AND HE IS NOT GOING TO CHICKEN OUT AND FAIL TO PROTECT A GIRL AGAIN.
Thus Kida is a cheerful ordinary highschooler by day and the reluctant and pissed off but very grounded leader of one of Tokyo's most dangerous color gangs by night.
Character Personality: For a boy who is at heart a good person, Kida is incredibly two-faced.
He has two basic, equally true sides. The first and most obvious is his 'outer' personality, which he refers to as his bravado. It's a very easy side of him to understand, and is worn so constantly that it's easy to take him as a more shallow character. He is flashy, loud, enjoys bad jokes and physical contact. He is the 'best friend' type of character who hits on tons of girls with no success because he is so obnoxious about it, who drags Our Hero around to have some fun, and is never serious.
He is an extrovert, a class clown, and a notorious flirt that can range between silly or so ridiculously over the top he must be actually joking. Really, he goes out of his way to appear like any shallow boy who is only interested in looks and could never possibly settle on a single woman. He is someone who skates through life on charm and charisma. His personality is magnetic, so that he can get along with anyone. He is the guy who everyone knows, not because he is popular or incredibly good looking, or good at sports, but just because he has talked to everyone.
Kida has a over-the-top way of doing everything, and seemingly unlimited amounts of energy. He likes to make exclamations that don't always make sense, is fond of engrish phrases, he gestures obsessively, has a million dramatic expressions, and is in general very convincing at making it look as if he is so completely upfront about everything that he couldn't possibly be thinking more than he is saying. He is absolutely the type of person that most people will either write off as not a threat, and everyone else will want to be friends with because he's just so fun.
Which isn't to say that Kida is always hyperactive. He can very much have a calm conversation, dispense good information, or just chill out quietly. When is not trying to make himself the center of attention, or distract people from his true feelings (or THEIR true feelings) is just as likely to be calmly listen or walk along with his hands behind his head, thinking to himself. But mostly he bounces from one mode to the next. Calm to cheeky to hyper to dramatic to playful and around again.
And to some extent, this 'front' side of Kida is all real. It is the face he puts on to get through his golden youth and have fun and love life. But while he uses it to hide his feelings and fears, it's not a lie in itself. Yes, he is genuinely a noisy class clown, and a flirt. Yes he is rambunctious, playful. Yes he tells jokes so bad you can't really call them jokes, just an extension of his dramatic flair, and yes he likes to make nonsensical speeches and haphazardly toss in engrish words and phrases.
But there is a great deal more to him that hides beneath the surface, and not just in the sense that everyone is deeper than they appear. No, Kida is highly self aware. He knows that he is putting on a show for others. He knows his own fears and weaknesses. He knows that for all he acts like people couldn't get by without him to drag them around and show them a fun life, he's really the one who is dependent on them to give his own life some meaning.
And when it comes down to it, that fact is one of Kida's primary character focuses. He lives for his friends. He is incredibly protective. He organizes his own actions around what is safest and best for them. Even as a child he was the type to send others away and handle the fights himself. He would sooner apologize for an offense and steer clear of a fight if a friend is with him, then try to act brave or confident. He's always inherently understood that stupid actions can reap painful rewards on your friends as much as yourself, and as such never encouraged others to risk themselves. No, he would much rather send them away and handle it himself.
But, as if he somehow sensed what would one day happen. Eventually Kida's stupidity did get a friend badly hurt. And because Kida is not fearless, he failed to even come to her rescue. This leads to the hidden aspect of Kida's personality and just how broken he is.
He is layered with guilt. It doesn't consume him. It has been a while and he has learned to live with and accept his failures. But those failures have made him terrified of failing again. In a way it's made him more dangerous. Despite how he is fixated on the golden years of youth, he's very aware now that it is an adult's world out there. He's had to cope with the fact that one of the people he cares about could honestly die. That he absolutely can not chicken out and fail again.
As such, Kida has become somewhat obsessed with protecting his friends. He pre-emptively gains information to learn how to steer them away from danger, he disappears to do this or that to spare them from being picked on, he tells them who to avoid and when all else fails, mobilizes his gang to take out what threatens them.
Speaking of gangs, the next facet to discuss is that Kida is a leader. However, like all of the kids in Durarara!! he is not an ideal leader. He has a charismatic personality, he is intelligent, and people seem to flock around him. But he is not capable of truly controlling what he creates. The gang he is a part of respects him because of his position as leader more than because of who he is as a person or what he believes in. And in the end all Kida can do is shore the tide to try to keep them from overflowing and going out of control. Despite becoming a gang leader at a young age, he never truly felt a part of it, and now he leads the Yellow Turbans out of necessity, but hates to do so. Particularly since he has realized the overall uselessness of his own 'power'.
Which comes down to just being a kid. Kida likes to talk about youth, and though he generally does so in a genki bff-character way, it is a fairly continuous focus for him. It's likely because when Kida's girlfriend was hurt he realized that they weren't just middleschoolers fucking around. That some Real Shit was going down in his narrow little world. That someone had almost died, that now she would probably be crippled for life. That someone was kidnapped, tortured, that a life was threatened. That it all happened because he took the advice of an adult named Orihara Izaya. And suddenly he didn't have any 'we're just kids' excuse.
So Kida has tried hard to reclaim that. And for a while he did. He had an ordinary love triangle with his ordinary friends and he went to school and lead an ordinary life. And when that got upset by events in canon he returned to lead his gang to use them to try to nullify that which threatened his ordinary life. And it really pisses him off, by the way. So much anger that he can't just happily live a normal life. That he had to get dragged back into all of this gang and fighting shit.
All in all, Kida is a complex character with a strong focus on friends and protection. He's even more worldly than he lets on, but knows he's less than he could be and is generally not as great as he likes to pretend. His absolute priority is the safety of his friends, and greatest desire is to just live a happy and ordinary life with them.
Character Abilities: Kida is smarter than he appears, but far from a genius. In general he has strong street smarts and moderate manipulation abilities: I.E. how to infuriate someone to make them act stupid, how to embarrass someone to send them on their way, how to arrange a situation so someone WANTS to leave instead of FORCING them to and thus bringing it to a fight. He is probably stronger at fisticuffs than he looks, but is by no means an exceptional fighter in any way. He is basically an average japanese noodleboy. He also has pretty fabulous acting skills and is generally a clever liar.
Character Weaknesses: Ordinariness. His own broken confidence, fear of the people he loves being hurt, and sort of obsessive compulsive need to protect them. ORIHARA IZAYA and pretty much anyone obviously terrifying he will generally back down from. Basically, Kida will play on the defensive in most cases. He's not a coward but he is not looking for trouble.
[ MEISTER SECTION ]
Why your character should be a Meister: Honestly, he would rather be a weapon. He wants to be someone who can protect his friends, and it would make him happy to be their tool. But life isn't so kind, and he just has the sort of personality that draws others to him. And, despite himself, he likes being the lead. The clash of what he wants vs what he's really capable of tends to be one of Kida's primary character conflicts, so he's a Meister and gets to continue to use others as tools for the protection of what he cares about, instead of just being strong enough to be that protection himself.
[ SOUL INFORMATION ]
Soul Description: Protective, cheeky, scared, two-faced, exuberant, flirty.
Soul Appearance: A yellow soul with the flop of his hair and two big eyes, and a swirl of a yellow scarf at it it's base. Expression can be smiling or solemn depending on Kida's current anxiety levels.

Third Person:
Bad bad bad bad bad shit!
Kida paced down the wide streets of Death City, Nevada, for several blocks, reciting the thoughtless mantra in his head before he finally peeled into one of the narrower side streets and leaned against a wall.
He took a shaky breath, and resisted the urge to collapse into a corner and duck his head between his knees.
This couldn't be happening.
No way... how does something like this happen?
He knew, on one level. It happened exactly has it had gone. Hadn't the man with absurdly red hair told him? Hadn't he seen scythes sprout out of that body? Hadn't he pinched and smacked and hair pulled in a futile effort to wake himself up from this ridiculous dream? He was running out of traditional situation responses to Manga Wherein The Hero Is Magically Transported To Another Universe Which He Must Save From Certain Destruction.
Aah... why did I ever think something like this would be fun?
A few weeks earlier, or a few weeks from now, maybe he wouldn't have minded the chance to have a magical adventure. But Shinigami-sama and his war with witches or whatever, he really didn't care about it. Anri was in danger from a slashing psychopath, the Dollars and the Turbans were inches away from going head-to-head. And he didn't have time to abandon his friends to a town going up in a gang war that was partially his own damn fault.
I can't help here anyway...
It was ridiculous. Aa, he'd heard the rules. Now he was a meister or weapon or whatever. But it was still absurd. More than any of that he was just a highschool student. Seriously, who the hell recruits sixteen year olds to fight wars? Maybe that was how it went down in manga, but in the real world he wasn't interested in fighting for his life. Heroes of justice should be adults, not kids.
Kida took another slow breath and tilted his head back, looking up at the wicked yellow moon over head. He cracked a weak grin. It really was like something out of a cartoon. But it was reality, too. He got the feeling if he died here it would hurt just as much as dying back in Ikebukuro. Scary. Worse because it didn't even involve him. He could be brave... if it was for Mikado or Anri. If it meant he didn't fail his friend again.
But this...
This didn't have anything to do with him.
"Only, if it gets finished I can go home, right?"
Kida spoke quietly, staring down at a loose fist that didn't show much conviction. But maybe at least it showed some willingness.
If he could get back to his friends, it would be worth it. Worth it to fight.
Feeling grim and not at all satisfied, but at least a little better for having made a resolution, Kida pushed off the wall of the alley and back into the streets of Death City.
