Insight into the US...
Hubert Beuve-Mery, the founder of Le Monde (France) newspaper, in 1944:
"The Americans may have preserved a cult of Liberty but they do not feel the need to liberate themselves from the servitude which their capitalism has created. "
Is this a source of our national angst--to be caught in the impossible position between the cult of liberty and the servitude of capitalism (especially our version of capitalism, that is insatiable consumerism)?
