gah, so the Oscars were last night and guys, even though the awards are usually really boring and predictable, that stuff is my crack. I actually don't even really care about the movies themselves that much, I just like the glitz and pageantry of it. And the montages. I love me some montages.
And also the best part was how Gwyenth Paltrow's dress totally looked like Leia's from the medal ceremony at the end of A New Hope.
I only saw one of the Best Picture nominees (The Artist) but I was so invested in it, so I was glad that it swept the major awards like expected. And it was TOTALLY WORTH IT watching Jean Dujardin give his acceptance speech and drop the French equivalent of the f-bomb on national television. oh my sweet little french croissant, how do you even exist.
But yeah, I saw The Artist last week and it was SO GOOD OMG. I mean, I've always been a fan of the 1920s/flappers/silent movies, so when I first heard about the movie I knew I wanted to check it out. And boy did it deliver! The plot was pretty basic (a silent film star's career plummets with the advent of talkies while a young ingenue (who got her start on a film of his) soars to stardom) but the performances were fantastic. Jean Dujardin definitely deserves all the awards he's won for the role; it's not easy acting solely through facial expressions and gestures but he was marvelous. There was definitely a lot of Douglas Fairbanks in his character but also a bit of Rudolph Valentino (which is a-ok by me because boy do I swoon over Rudolph Valentino).
And so I walked out of the theatre completely head over heels in love with Jean Dujardin. My roommate and I have been obsessively watching interviews and such with him on YouTube, even though we can't understand a single thing he says because neither of us speak French. BUT HE IS SO CHARMING SDLGKAKJASF and honestly it's just enough to hear him speaking French because oh boy is that one of the most beautiful sounds in the world. And he is just so precious too; on the red carpet last night a reporter asked him what he liked about America and he said the faces, being able to turn right on red, and cinnamon rolls. He is a walking charm bomb and I am completely smitten.
And now I'm dedicating myself to watching as much of his filmography as I can because this obsession has completely taken over my life and I have lost any and all control.
And Bérénice Bejo was wonderful as Peppy Miller and she had great chemistry with Dujardin. And the relationship between their characters worked so well, and honestly that's why the movie worked.
And the soundtrack's great too, as it should be. I've been listening to it nonstop. :D
But other than that, I wasn't too invested in the Oscars this year.
As for other things, I've already bought my ticket to go see The Hunger Games at midnight on the 23rd! My friends and I are all planning to dress up as Capitol citizens so I've had a ton of fun planning my costume. And I'm trying to convince my friend (who I recently introduced to Star Wars) to come see TPM in theatres with me (I saw it already but she hasn't) because you gotta experience it on the big screen at least once, and I don't want to wait until ANH comes out in three years!
But that's about it. Now I'm off to go watch Jean Dujardin movies on netflix instant and try and teach myself French so that when I study abroad in Paris in May and June, I will be ready should I meet him in a ~strange twist of fate.~
(Sarah stop being ridiculous and go write those two papers you have due on Thursday)
(but oh god he's so adorable)
