Kiseop wants to die.
Despite Kevin’s death feeling like it lasted for hours, the whole thing was really only a few minutes long and the base was still being fired at. He could walk right over there, right into the line of fire. He could let his blood pour out onto the dirt floor, leaving behind an ugly red stain. But he feels as if he’d be letting Kevin down by giving up like that.
Instead, he buries Kevin.
Well, no, he doesn’t. He can’t. But just leaving his friend there where he died feels wrong, walking away and leaving his body without some kind of...anything, feels wrong. Kiseop picks him up, hooking his arms around Kevin’s torso and dragging him towards a nearby tree. He props Kevin’s body against it and closes Kevin’s eyes - not because that’s what they do in the movies when somebody dies, but because Kiseop can’t stand the way Kevin’s eyes look when they’re open like that. It’s almost like they can see him, staring him down as if it were a contest. He’d win, of course. He can’t blink anymore.
There’s a bright red stain on his jacket and it reminds Kiseop of the time Dongho did the laundry and accidentally put a red sock in with all their white clothes. Pink was their new favorite color for weeks. It’s a friendly memory, but Kiseop can’t bring himself to smile.
Kiseop sighs and turns away. For a while he was able to escape into a world where only he and Kevin existed, but now it’s back to reality where there’s guns being fired and lives being lost.

Soohyun scrambles back down the stairs. If he stays on that roof there’s no way in hell he’s getting out alive, and at least one of them has to make it. Ever since losing Kiseop, Kevin, and Eli when their building collapsed, the need to live through this grew stronger. Hoon of course, would have to do it with him. He has no idea where the Super Junior members are but it’s safe to assume that they’re dead as well. What he does know is thathe’s not going home alone. If he does turn out to be the only one left, if Hoon gets killed too, then he’s not going home either.
He bursts back out into the night. It’s almost dawn now, and the sun’s playing peek-a-boo, starting to show itself above the horizon. He feels like a coward for running from a fight but he figures that maybe he can do some damage from the ground while the Northerners were focusing on everyone else. He wants to hit himself because that’s a dumb idea and he’s down here for no reason.
A quick glance around and he sees that everyone else in the area is either dead or dying, except for one man.
He stands near a tree. Soohyun looks at him for a moment, eyeing the thin body, wondering. The man lifts his head to look at Soohyun, and then Soohyun’s racing towards the other, enveloping him in a bone crushing hug.
“Kiseop,” Soohyun whispers against Kiseop’s cheek. He dropped his gun for the short dash towards the friend he thought he’d never see again. It lies in the dirt forgotten because he’d rather have Kiseop in his arms than a soulless lump of metal that was created to kill.
“Soohyun. You’re alive,” Kiseop whispers back. There’s trucks in the distance, they can hear the engines far away over the flat terrain. A loud string of rounds are fired and a chorus of screams erupt. Kiseop jumps at the sounds and Soohyun holds him tighter.
”I’m alive. So are you. So is Hoon,” Soohyun says. He doesn’t mention Eli but Kiseop still hears it, loud and clear.
“Kevin’s gone too,” Kiseop says. “Eli...he died, when the building...” he trails off.
Soohyun nods. He really doesn’t want to remember the last time he saw Eli. It was just the three of them. Him, Eli, and Hoon, had all gotten out of the building with nothing more than dusty hair and a few scratches from being shoved against the walls in the chaos of the evacuation. They had all scanned the crowd for the missing two, Kiseop and Kevin, but couldn’t find them. Eli abruptly charged back into the building to search for them before Soohyun or Hoon could stop him. It was only a few seconds after he went through the door that the building topped and took Eli with.
Kiseop releases Soohyun to point at a figure leaning against the tree. Soohyun can see Kevin’s face clearly in the early morning light and he feels the sting of hot tears behind his eyes. The sight of Kevin, stained bloody but still looking so damn peaceful is painful.
    He’ll never forget this.
The trucks that were once far away are getting closer. There’s less shouting as people die, but they still stand there. They’re thinking it’s a miracle they’re still alive when a truck skids by and a soldier empties a clip in their direction. They stumble out of the way and are shocked to find that they’re actually okay. The truck keeps going, followed by more just like it. They’re not much more than specks on the horizon within a few minutes, disappearing as fast as they came.
Kiseop’s sarcasm kicks in, wondering if they were just out for a morning spin.
