I walked by the Busniess School on my way back from class today. As I passed the fountain, I noticed a tripod just standing out in the open, unattended. It was too sturdy and high featured to be for some construction workers sextant, so I looked closer. On it was a sticker: WDIV11a. After a quick look around, I spotted Ronda Walker, a WDIV morning news anchor. She was clammoring around the entrance of the B School with her cameraman along side. "Where do you want me?" she asked, as the two students she was about to interview hastily moved to accomedate her. It looked to be an interesting situation, so I went to my car on Oakland to grab my camera.
I came back and they were setting up in the courtyard by Davidson Hall. The cameraman was positioning his Betacam on the tripod while Miss Walker chatted with the students on a stone bence. I had my telephoto lens, so I kept a good distance of about 50 feet while snapping some shots. A woman, who I assume was the producer, asked me, "What are you taking pictures for?"
"I was just walking by and saw you guys, so I thought I'd grab a few shots..."
Miss Walker stopped her banter with the two interviewees to interject, "Oh, you like taking pictures of people just talking, huh?"
I was actually going to continue with my statement and say I was a fan of her and Local 4 (which anyone who knows me knows is an obvious lie), but with that comment, I was extremely disappointed. Never before has a 'local celeb' made such a rude comment toward me. I mean, come on, you're watched by millions of viewers in a top 10 market. You should expect a little attention. So I just kept shooting ... not to give Miss Walker the satisfaction of feeling like she's photo-worthy, but to spite a woman who would make such an uncouth comment when her whole job is related to maintaining a friendly, approachable image.
So, I'll post the most unflattering shot I got of her. Anyone want to bet me $10 that she'll never be more than a shit-on, crack-of-dawn news bitch?
